They would be a fun way to get around with the already existing rails. The locomotives could be steam, diesel, or both. I would like to see trains added to Minecraft!
No Support. There are already minecarts. You can make a sort-of train by using Furnace Minecarts, and then putting a chain of minecarts behind or in front of them. You can get it going with coal.
Yes, but reversing them is one hell of a time. You have to switch the cars around and recouple them. Also, there is support. They could use the same format as minecarts, only with a reversal capability!
Maybe not full blown trains, but a definite revamp of the current train mechanic minecarts have is badly needed. The inability for them to take corners basically makes them useless.
I just finished working on a semi-auto bamboo farm that uses hopper minecarts underneath to collect the items. Clearly the farm creates many more items in one go than a single cart can handle, so I went with a system that sends multiple carts out (with delays to prevent funky hitbox collisions between them). It would be so much easier to just send a single train of like five hopper carts to collect all the items in one round.
Bonus feature would be the ability for hopper carts next to each other to empty the full train length if one cart is over a hopper, and vice versa with filling from a hopper.
I feel like they could do so much more with minecarts, at this point they are overshadowed by ice boats and elytras. I think they should revamp all the extra types of minecarts because they are useless right now (besides hopper minecarts and normal ones).

How do you make trains? How do they work? How do you power them?

Coal could be added, with a storage system in locomotives to burn the coal!

1.) You should add all the info to your first post and not have it segmented in sequential posts.
2.) There's nothing bad about the idea, and linking minecarts is fine. But the whole steam-powered locomotive thing seems a bit much.
