I have a simple idea for an invisible mob spawning block, perhaps a 'haunted' block that would spawn ghosts at night. Ghosts would be difficult to see from far away.
To find the haunted block, it must be very close to a torch, maybe only one or two blocks. To destroy it, maybe only direct sunlight or fire. Maybe a special helmet made of redstone/gold/bone could 'see' the haunted block.
Why? Well, in current survival mode, permanently taming a mob spawn is fairly easy. An invisible mob spawning block may add an element of exploration and challenge. A ghost-hunt. The ghost would not need to be a very dangerous mob and ghosts seem to fit with skeletons and zombies. I also think it adds a possibility of 'haunted' structures and an edge of uncertainty during the night.
