Yeah, this has probably been discussed before, I'd imagine about a thousand times or so because it sounds like such a basic idea that would actually work, but it begs the question: WHY IS THERE NO FURNITURE IN MINECRAFT?
Why do I have to install a mod to put basic furniture in my house? Just add some chairs and tables so we can finally cut out the middle-man. It's like a joke that they haven't added chairs to minecraft, kind of like how they say they removed Herobrine on every update.
Designs for furniture don't have to be complicated, maybe you can add upholstery with wool or something, but it would be nice to have something to sit on while I step away from the game to go do something, or when I have visitors on multiplayer. Also, maybe adding plates to put food on?
It's just an idea. I know this doesn't sound like some big exciting feature, but it definitely would be a nice and welcome addition. Cauldrons are 90% useless but I don't mind having one in my house just because it looks nice. Same goes for flowerpots.
This is nowhere near a complete, intelligent argument for furniture in Minecraft, but I do agree that Minecraft could stand to use furniture.
But the player is supposed to be creative with blocks!
Why is the player supposed to be creative with blocks though? Why are Minecraft players so quick to dismiss any new block idea, especially furniture, with "well you should just be creative with the blocks you already have!"
We need to minimize the number of blocks in the game to prevent bloating the game with niche or useless features!
This is a noble cause, but seeing as Mojang intends to keep updating this game seemingly indefinitely, and seeing as the game already contains a lot of bloated and useless features, at what point does this argument become moot?
Now, I understand that Minecraft is not Terraria, a game filled with a lot of blocks and furniture that serves almost no purpose whatsoever. However, Minecraft has already made moves that would put it closer to this kind of game: doors now come in different wood variants that reflect different door designs. Glazed Terracotta allows you to use pre-defined patterns in builds. Would it be that out of place to, say, add wooden chairs that reflect 6 different chair designs?
Chairs would break Minecraft's simplistic voxel graphical style!
You mean the one that's already broken by all of the furniture items already in the game like Brewing Stands, Flower Pots, Enchanting Tables, Fences, etc.? Or the style that's already broken by Boats and other complicated entity models?
Minimalistic chairs and tables would at most be out of place in the game for a few days after their announced addition to the game.
Chairs and Tables are nice and all, but what if you want to make a piece of furniture that isn't either of those? Do you just use blocks again? Doesn't that make the old furniture look out of place?
The thing is, you could say the same thing about the doors in the game. "Well I wanted to make a sliding glass door for my building, so I had to resort to pistons! We should remove regular doors so all buildings have equally ugly doors"
Let's take an example I think about frequently when thinking about this, lawn/pool chairs. Obviously, if you added regular chairs, but you were limited to building lawn chairs out of stairs and slabs, this would make my lawn chairs look out of place. That being said, there are a lot of things you can't build well with Minecraft's current set of blocks. (I struggle to find any block that could possibly resemble a microwave over my furnace "oven".)
I do consider this one of the most valid criticisms, but think about how useful even a simple chair with 4 legs and a flat back would be. That'd cover most kitchen chairs, and by proxy most restaurant chairs. Adding a back composed of bars would be a nice addition, but not entirely necessary. This chair would also not be out of place in a school setting, albeit it might be missing a desk attached to the chair, but this is a minor loss since the old chair design didn't have this either.
On why we should add chairs and tables and possibly other furniture:
It looks less stupid: I would be far more pleased to be looking at a house with real chairs and tables than one with blocks that resemble chairs and tables if you squint really hard and you're told beforehand what it's supposed to be.
It allows you to add non-armchair chairs, shorter tables, etc to your house: Let's be honest, what block could you possibly implement into the game that resembles a kitchen chair but isn't one? How are you going to represent a coffee table using anything but a slab?
Not everyone wants to build a mansion: Having smaller chairs and tables means people don't have to build massive dining rooms just to fit a whole family of people around a table without building a stair couch, nor do people have to increase the height of their ceilings just to make sure the top of their wool sofa doesn't touch the ceiling.
How we should add chairs:
Maybe I'll write up a detailed suggestion about this, who knows.
My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.
I'm very alone in my Minecraft worlds as I don't have a very good internet connection to run a server. If you're like me, you might be interested in my Posse mod suggestion.
Yeah, this has probably been discussed before, I'd imagine about a thousand times or so because it sounds like such a basic idea that would actually work, but it begs the question: WHY IS THERE NO FURNITURE IN MINECRAFT?
I'm fairly sure Mojang has already has already this question. It's because they want us to be creative.
Why do I have to install a mod to put basic furniture in my house? Just add some chairs There are alternatives for chairs in minecraft. and tables There are alternatives for tables in minecraft. so we can finally cut out the middle-man. It's like a joke that they haven't added chairs to minecraft, kind of like how they say they removed Herobrine on every update. No, saying they removed Herobrine is a joke, not adding is not a joke.
Designs for furniture don't have to be complicated, maybe you can add upholstery with wool or something, but it would be nice to have something to sit on while I step away from the game to go do something, or when I have visitors on multiplayer You could already make the impression of sitting with a chair alternative and a Minecart. . Also, maybe adding plates to put food on? On the Java edition, you can already place Item Frames facing upwards on blocks, together with a Pressure Plate and any food item, it makes the impression of a Plate.
It's just an idea. I know this doesn't sound like some big exciting feature, but it definitely would be a nice and welcome addition. Cauldrons are 90% useless but I don't mind having one in my house just because it looks nice. Same goes for flowerpots.

Hey guys I'm James, I used to be a noob but now I'm not, I finally figured out how to use TextCraft so here's a banner for one of my suggestions.
I agree, but I think there is a limit. For instance, microwaves don't really need to be in the game.
Furniture That Should Be Added
I think furniture should be customizable, but without hundreds of items. We can have "in-world crafting." In my opinion, my Chairs suggestion handles this well: There are only wooden, cobblestone, and wool chairs, making there only 23 items with all variants included. You're able to add cushioning by right-clicking on the chair with a wool block, allowing you to customize chairs. Furthermore, chairs link together to make couches when placed adjacent to one another, but you can make them keep their arms by holding shift when placing them. This allows you to easily build chairs, movie theater seats, benches, couches, etc. The cushion even looks like a pillow when on a wool chair to make couches more realistic.
Those are just the features available in the suggestion. Maybe right-clicking with an axe on a wooden chair (or a pickaxe on a cobblestone chair) would remove the arms. More chair variants (stone chairs? bamboo chairs? scaffolding chairs that look like lawn chairs?) could also add more variety.
While not necessary, it's also nice when furniture serves a real purpose, such as beds letting you skip the night, chairs (in my suggestion) letting you skip the day, bookshelves enhancing enchanting tables, doors keeping out mobs, etc.
Furniture That Shouldn't Be Added
Tables seem redundant since they're rather simple to begin with and can easily be created with existing blocks (Chairs, beds, and doors are not as easy to create with existing blocks, and when doing so you almost always take up more space than is desirable.)
Chandeliers are also relatively easy to make with fences, iron bars, or glass panes and a light source.
Yeah, this has probably been discussed before, I'd imagine about a thousand times or so because it sounds like such a basic idea that would actually work, but it begs the question: WHY IS THERE NO FURNITURE IN MINECRAFT?
Because the creators don't think it's important. A game about mining, building and surviving doesn't really need chandeliers and kitchen sinks. Then again, there's a lot of already-implemented aesthetic things that aren't "needed". Why is furniture this important? Why the all caps red text?
Why do I have to install a mod to put basic furniture in my house? Just add some chairs and tables so we can finally cut out the middle-man. It's like a joke that they haven't added chairs to minecraft, kind of like how they say they removed Herobrine on every update.
"Cut out the middle man"? lol what? You're trying to make this sound like not having furniture is some game-breaking mistake. Not having furniture is not some "joke". This is just you wanting it so bad that your perspective is now "not adding this thing I want is a huge mistake!" The "removed Herobrine" crap is something that should have been stopped long ago. Loooong long ago.
Designs for furniture don't have to be complicated, maybe you can add upholstery with wool or something, but it would be nice to have something to sit on while I step away from the game to go do something, or when I have visitors on multiplayer. Also, maybe adding plates to put food on?
Why is this so important? The ideas aren't bad but why the extra energy? Does this serve any further purpose than "it would be nice to have"? The only furniture I think is important is tables, because pressure plates on a stick is dumb. Maybe even some different light sources.
I think furniture should be customizable, but without hundreds of items. We can have "in-world crafting."
I would disagree a little bit here, I think better than 100s of complex variants consisting of lots of combinations, I think it'd be better to have a few chairs that suit almost all needs, for example a [future C1ff here: I accidentally skipped to the next point without finishing this sentence, sorry]
While not necessary, it's also nice when furniture serves a real purpose, such as beds letting you skip the night, chairs (in my suggestion) letting you skip the day, bookshelves enhancing enchanting tables, doors keeping out mobs, etc.
For the record, I would actually argue bookshelves are an example of a furniture item that should be in the game because of the limitations of 1x1 meter blocks, even if purely for aesthetics. They are the only block that represents a bunch of items on shelves. (I think more shelf blocks would be nice too, a bunch of glass bottles or plates or something would be nice)
I think it's okay to have a furniture item in Minecraft if it fits a relatively medieval to mid-industrial-age style and it's very difficult or impossible to represent with blocks on a player-scale. (And as long as it's something the general public would understand, obviously a vague unknown piece of machinery would be out of place)
My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.

Well for one, an argument that engages the counterarguments as my post did. An argument contains three things: a claim, evidence or reasoning for the claim, and a rebuttal to counterarguments. The argument here presents a claim, 'we should add furniture to Minecraft', but doesn't go into detail about the reasons for adding furniture or making a rebuttal of any the counterarguments. (It does try to compromise with the minimalism complaint a bit when it says "Designs for furniture don't have to be complicated...", but other than that it's not making a strong case.)

Can't remember what it's called, but there was a mod in the past that allowed you to make blocks into smaller pieces to be able to design small things, individually pixel by pixel.
Maybe something similar to that, but with a interface that you can open, where it shows the item in a format similar to a skin maker. It'd maybe show the amount of blocks you currently have to use on the side, like a palette, and you'd be able to grab and scroll to look at the block from all angles.
They could even have functionality, for instance there could be a list of presets, and say for instance you pick a bed. It would show you a transparent image, which would be the basic guidlines you have to build along for it to function as a bed, but you could add extra details if you like, as long as it doesn't exceed the normal block width of a bed, 1x2.
Anything beyond that would have to be modeled seperately and added on in adjoining blocks, and as such wouldn't technically be a part of the bed. You could pick up every modeled block seperately.
With this, anyone could do basic 3D modeling to create decorations. A format where you can do one block at a time and then place them in adjoining blocks to create large patterns could be interesting.

There are three distinct mods, though the third one isn't really all that close to your original description.
Chisels n Bits -- no technical functionality, which means no custom beds you can sleep the night away in or spiral-opening spaceship doors. You can mix and match materials in the same block space, but all the tiny bits are block-shaped and therefore any slopes or curves will necessarily retain the blockiness. Some people like that, others don't. CnB does really well in the fluids department, basically allowing nearly all fluids to be bitted (I imagine there are some that are either not compatible due to obscurity or weird issues, or which simply cannot be bitted for deliberate technical reasons).
Little Tiles -- essentially the same mod as Chisels n Bits, but it fixes most of the annoyances found in Chisels n Bits (moreorless LT = Chisels n Bits but faster). There are also certain features found in LT that don't exist in CnB at all, such as custom doors that can open/close (not only in the standard Minecraft way, but you can customize the duration, delay, and the entire animation process), custom chairs you can sit on, custom containers you can store items in, and custom beds you can sleep the night away in. Additionally, all of these things can be nested in each other to accurately model any real-world complex construct (ie, a piano you can tickle, a deluxe tackle box full of stuff in trays that fold out to get to the stuff below, etc).
Forge Multipart -- this gives you a very limited set of microblocks that can be placed in a limited set of pre-configured spots within a block. You can still mix-n-match materials, but you have less control over placement compared to the other two mods.

In Minecraft, you're supposed to be creative with the blocks that are there.
My suggestions: Enhancements - Throwable Fire Charges - On Phantoms and Elytra. Also check out The Minecraftian Language. This signature is not here to waste your space.
With the addition of several of the new 1.14 blocks (lanterns, lecterns, etc.), I'd be open to finally adding working chairs and tables.
Watch out for the crabocalypse. Some say the day will never come. But it will.
Feel free to drop by for a chat whenever.
If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
I don't personally have an opinion on this, just wanted to say item frames placed down make pretty convincing plates.

That could actually be an amazing thing to add.
