It's really frustrating when you die in a messed up way and lose all of your stuff. I think that a gravestone to mark your place of death for a certain amount of time on the map would be awesome.
I don't think it should be an item that's super simple to make but also not impossible. Maybe have it made from polished andesite and a name tag? This also makes more use for the andesite or whatever block its made from. The item could be carried and if you die it automatically places the gravestone.
I only support this if graves act as containers holding all your items on death. I also think it should just happen when you die and not require a specific item. Mining it would destroy it unless you had silk touch.
Maybe it could act like a small chest only when a death generates it (not if you silk touch it and replace it), and any items you were carrying outside of your inventory (hotbar, armor in use, left hand, etc.) explode everywhere like normal so there's still a punishment for dying besides XP loss and general inconvenience.
The mark on the map disappearing would also tell you exactly when said exploded stuff has despawned, but everything in the grave would act just like stuff in a barrel. Silk touching an occupied one would send the items everywhere like normal containers do.
If it gets picked up by another player within the 5 minutes, the dot on the map should follow the player who took it until what's left on the clock runs out so you can track grave robbers for a short time.

Would this be marked on a map? Because otherwise you could just look for the big pile of dropped items.
Yes mark it on the map.
I personally think keepInventory should be enabled by default.
My suggestions: Enhancements - Throwable Fire Charges - On Phantoms and Elytra. Also check out The Minecraftian Language. This signature is not here to waste your space.
I overall with agree with this idea!

Hey guys I'm James, I used to be a noob but now I'm not, I finally figured out how to use TextCraft so here's a banner for one of my suggestions.
