I know there's a mod that does this, but it would be great to be able to go to the Moon in Minecraft vanilla, adding new mobs, blocks, mechanics, etc. I've been thinking about this idea for a while, but I'll only talk about the method i've come up with to access this hypothetical new dimension:
There would be a new type of structure in the overworld: Craters. These craters contain meteorites, and these meteorites have a core block, which can only be obtained with Silk Touch. Once the player has obtained enough meteorite cores, it should be able to build a portal similar to the nether one. This portal can only be activated by throwing a splash potion of Jump Boost on the lower blocks of the portal, and said portal can only be entered during the night.
This would be a cool idea, but I think a portal wouldn’t fit as a way to get to the moon very well as the moon isn’t technically in another dimension (it’s just in space). The nether and end are completely unique areas that have no way to reach them outside of using a magic portal. Instead of using meteorites for a portal, they could probably be used to make weapons with unique effects, and the craters would be found in abundance on the moon. A rocket doesn’t fit the fantasy theme of Minecraft, so I don’t know how you would reach it. This is an interesting idea that has a lot of potential though.
Well I've been thinking about it and I came up with a more fitting method: Instead of making a portal, why not just build an horizontal platform that launches you into the air when you step on it, sending you towards the moon?
That could work, an idea a came up with was a sort of end-staff that would teleport you to where you pointed it at, (it would have a huge cooldown and take XP to use) and if you pointed at the moon you would get teleported there (Portal 2 vibes). You could make it using the meteorite, an eye of ender and and a couple other items.
The moon as a dimension sounds very clichéd and boring, sorry. There's nothing original or of much interest in this "dimension". It's just craters, meteor stuff, and a portal with a weird way of being activated.

I personally would love the idea of being able to travel to space in some way.
But another part of me has to agree with senpian, it is very unoriginal, and the moon IRL is a very empty place so I'm not sure how much Mojang could actually do with it.
In the modded sphere, there are at least 4 mods that lets you go to other dimensions just by travelling normally:
Aether -- falling into the void drops you into the overworld
Galacticraft -- build rockets, go to planets/moons/etc, rinse and repeat
Advanced Rocketry -- same as Galacticraft, just with different details
Forgiving Void -- falling out of the world reinserts you at the top (or, I think, can send you to some other dimension...like falling into the Nether)
Perhaps vanilla could take this concept a small step further by introducing conditions. For example, that suggestion for the Abyss dimension could be accessed only if you are wearing a turtle helmet AND you dove deep enough into an ocean; just diving down with a door or waterbreathing potions to refill your air wouldn't trigger the dimensional transfer. Getting to space could be similar, where you had to use rocket-elytra AND be wearing some sort of helmet (or perhaps a full 3-piece set of special armor) that protected you.

I like the idea of different dimensions, but minecraft as a game that tries to be relatively simple, the methods are kind of convoluted. Not bad ideas but maybe too complicated to be plausible in vanilla.
I know there's a mod that does this, but it would be great to be able to go to the Moon in Minecraft vanilla, adding new mobs, blocks, mechanics, etc. Ok, good start. I've been thinking about this idea for a while, but I'll only talk about the method i've come up with to access this hypothetical new dimension : Why not discuss the entire dimension and the features inside of it? You said this dimension would have new mobs, blocks and mechanics, so what are they?
There would be a new type of structure in the overworld: Craters. How rare are they? Seeing how they are meteorites, are they pre-generated or naturally occur as you play? Any specific biome they spawn in or all? These craters contain meteorites, and these meteorites have a core block Is "core block" the name of the block?, which can only be obtained with Silk Touch What happens if you mine it normally? With what tool does it mine the fastest?. What is the rest of the Meteorite made of apart from the Core Blocks? What do the craters, meteorites and core blocks look like (color, ect...)?Once the player has obtained enough meteorite cores How many is "enough"?, it should be able to build a portal similar to the nether one Similar to the Nether Portal or in the exact shape?. This portal can only be activated by throwing a splash potion of Jump Boost on the lower blocks of the portal, and said portal can only be entered during the night.
And that's it for now! Hope you like my idea. The concept is good but you gave very little detail and what you did manage to talk about was only how to get to the dimension. If you're going to release a suggestion, finish it first. Please respond with the necessary corrections and details added and then add them to the original post.
Well I've been thinking about it and I came up with a more fitting method: Instead of making a portal, why not just build an horizontal platform that launches you into the air when you step on it, sending you towards the moon? What you build it out of? How would you activate it or turn it on? How big would it need to be?

If you're going to change your mind about how the portal is made, then change how it's made in the original post.

I would have to disagree with you. NetNav1's idea on how to get to The Moon is actually very similar to building a Nether Portal. Saying this is not simple is like saying going to The Nether is complicated, and if that exists in Vanilla and is Vanilla then your whole point about Minecraft not being complicated would be wrong.
Here are the similarities and differences between The Nether's portal and The Moon's portal. Instead of finding Obsidian in a cave underground, you find a Meteor Core above ground. Instead of activating the portal with a Flint & Steel, you activate it with a Potion of Leaping. In fact, the portals are also made in the same shape and you enter them both by walking into them. The only unique thing about The Moon's portal is that you can only enter it at night, which even then is not really complicated at all. Your argument on The Moon's portal being too complicated for Vanilla Minecraft is false.

Hey guys I'm James, I used to be a noob but now I'm not, I finally figured out how to use TextCraft so here's a banner for one of my suggestions.

The original idea was logical. Further on it appears they expanded upon the idea without editing the original post.
A rocket elytra and armor set doesn't have much information
. The second idea, first thing is "end-staff that would teleport you to where you pointed it at" Ender pearls do that. Would you be able to use it many times? Perhaps it would transport you farther? "You could make it using the meteorite, an eye of ender and and a couple other item" A couple other item? Not much info. Adding conditions like how it has a cooldown, or taking XP, i wouldn't personally think make it more balanced. It just seems vague and complicated.

i like the idea of a moon biome but what about a biome based on an 1835 understanding of the moon?
like the 1901 novel by h. g. wells, you could craft "cavorite" to ascend to the Moon biome?

Wasn't it stated that there was gonna be no more dimensions?
Didn't know that. I guess it makes all these discussions of dimesions pointless.

Maybe, but the point of this suggestion is that, yes, indeed their should be another dimension.

Was there ever an official statement and if so could I please have a link to this announcement?
That wouldn't even matter if no more dimensions were being added as Mojang doesn't come onto the Minecraft Forum anyways.
