Edit: To avoid confusion, this is what I want:
I want to be able to freely give out my IP to anyone and everyone, so they can see all the awesome stuff we have made, have them go through my hedge maze, walk around the boardwalk, climb the lighthouse stairs, etc.
But by default if they have the IP they cannot edit the map. Whitelisting does not do what I explained in the above sentence :sad.gif:
Remember Viva Pinata online? Remember how awesome that was because everyone can see and move around your garden at any time, but can't touch it?
Well this should make minecraft greifing a thing of the past. No big brother reversing, no letting griefers thing they are griefing.
When a person joins a server, they are a /spectator. Only the OP can grant /builder (normal player) and even /op privledges.
I assume this should be very easy to implement, and will no longer associate minecraft with griefing, as the only flaw is the OP trusting someone to a builder.
Is there any reason why this hasn't been implemented yet? Do people not want to have strangers visit their map, even if they can't manipulate anything? Is it too difficult for a /spectator /builder /op system?
Is it easier to use Big Brother to always have an OP view, watch, reverse damage done instead of just not having to bother watching everything with a default spectator option?
That would be one of the best solutions to this problem yet.
The only problem is people are too obsessed with adding keys, locks and unbreakable doors to the game to even think about how to stop griefers in the first place.
Otherwise, most servers already do this. Default rank is guest, and guests can't do **** without being upgraded to builder. Plus, how would the OPs know to trust them if they can't build anything?
On topic: I think that this, combined with whitelists, would be the best way to fight greifers. If a OP/admin of a server doesnt want some people in the server, they can remove them from the whitelist. This would allow people who want to check out a server before they play on it to do so, and not have to be monitered by trusted players during their visit.
I'm afraid I didn't explain my point too well, I want give the IP out to everyone, and have anyone join at any time to tour our world, but can't change anything.

Sorry, but -1.
Can I please have a link to this? From the past few months and several topics I have made, no one has provided a link where it worked, or would provide the link, but did not know how to edit the files to allow guest by default.
Those who were nice and just gave me a zip file with it already set up did not work, and they realized it didn't work either :sad.gif:
aren't there multiple mods that do this type of stuff?
Yes, but after 3 months, 27 topics, and less 27 replies, no one has been able to give me a solid answer, or a link to this solution. Google searching, notepad editing, testing has all failed, and no one yet has been able to link to one that fits my idea :sad.gif:
Also, people have sent me bukkit folders that have "build: false" default permissions, but either they do not work, or they can only build below sea level.

I support.
ever heard of it?
Pretty much this.

That makes me think you are one of them.

Whitelisting requires work. spectating doesn't :smile.gif:
