This might be two far out of scope but of the amazing things you can create in Minecraft it seems to me that it needs to borrow a bit from lego.
When I see someone make a really cool pirate ship I think, wouldn't that be awesome on a mostly water server, you could sail around and just have a fun adventure. Or maybe someone builds a jet plane of funky final fantasy style airship, these structures look great but without locomotion it is just a shame they could not be more. it's almost fitting with how epicly huge a minecraft map can be.
Not sure if it could ever be done or how it could be implemented but if there was ever a way to create a mod or game play element for vehicles a little bit more involved then just the mine cart and boats that would really be something pretty epic.
I guess mechanically what you what have to do is have a control block that you can drive from, and maybe a block that when placed against another blocks will tie or link them together as one entity. I don't know, if people can make complex logic computers in the game with sticks and red stones then other mechanical operations might work too.
I was gonna say that all solid blocks are pretty much nailed to a fixed point in minecrafts invisible lattice (or whatever you call a 3d grid) and can't be moved over this invisible grid but then I remember gravel and sand...
