Hey guys, this was from an earlier compilation thread i made that I'm now splitting into different topics!
If you're like me, you're probably tempted to just go out and walk as far away from your home as you can sometimes (beach house anyone?
Soooo you built a secondary base wayyyyy far away. miles away. you know what? Your base is basically destroyed, greifed, and being t-bagged by creepers. so why the hell do you need a compass to get yourself back to bad memories? My solution? a magnet. =Redstone
Now, The problem that's probably popped into your heads right now is "well, what if i put down multiple magnets?"
Simple, a system in which compasses are synced with magnets to provide personalized directions. No long and vague directions, no more looking for your base's signature clump of dirt (???) and no more of this stupid approximation stuff.
How the sync system (hehe, the zinc system) would work is this. You're holding a compass right? right. you go up to a placed magnet, and right click on it. BOOM! your compass is synced. Pretty simple, and top notch tech
Let's watch a clip of gameplay - "nobody will ever find my secret base full of diamonds now that i have this compass to tell me exactly where it is!" - "Hey, that guy doesnt look cool,"
*KILL* -"Holy shat, this compass doesnt point to spawn! lets go find whatever this is!"
*proceeds to / / / his base
As you can see, the interchangeability of compasses synced with different magnets can lead to very personalized gameplay. Treasure hunts, secret bases, navigation across large maps, you name it, this will be a very interesting piece of technologically advanced technology :biggrin.gif:

In laymans terms
- you craft a magnet
- you place it down
- you right click the magnet with your compass
- your compass is now synced with that magnet, it will point towards that magnet
- No other compass can point towards that magnet because it has not been synced with that magnet
- You can sync the compass with another magnet, but it will only point to that magnet afterwards
Well it wasn't a big annoyance, only in a 5 block radius, then it sorta bugged out your compass
Here is your idea!

Magnets #5) It's a bit over powered, it's a bit complicated, but actually pretty simple when intergrated
Now let me introduce you to a new game mechanic
The Magnet Mechanic if you will
Now All Magnetic Blocks, would have a "Magnetic Aura"
Now this would work similar to a torches light radius
it starts off as strong as possible when comming from the source, but then diminishes when it goes away from the source
So let's say that Iron Ore would have a magnetic aura of 5, when not in that 5 block vicinity, it would act like a normal magnet, but when you enter that 5 block vicinity, it would be slowly attracted to the source of magnetism
the closer and closer you get, the more it points towards the Ore
An Iron block would have a magnetic Aura of 16 (like glowstone with light)
And Iron armour would be a bit complex to code seeing as how it would move (it's like the question of adding moving light), but the player with Iron armour on would be a total, if possible more than 16
The Only draw backs I see in a system like that, is that it wouldn't be able to "get your attenttion" at more than 16 blocks of range, since the light leve now is only @ 16 (for chunk generating reasons, I think)....so that might be scratched...would be cool as a mod
Anyways for coding reasons even if unrealistic your idea of a magnet would work better (I came up with that magnet system for almost nothing lol)
When I was talking about the Ore I meant to say Compass Not Magnet...see how it works now?
And the only complex thing was Iron armour, I thought you knew I was leaving that out
I just have no idea how complicated that idea would be for notch to impliment. but yes, it would be a nice, if small touch. Take a hostage, put em in a cell surrounded by iron blocks :-P
Take out lighting, replace so it doesn't send light
Give all blocks a property (all non-magnetic blocks = 0, all magnetic blocks {blocks made of Iron}depending) so pretty much copy, paste and edit
(I think, or it could be something else, like I said not a programmer)
Take Compass, do some coding so it works with Magnetic Aura
Idk how hard that would be, so for the basics, it would just snap to the magnetic source, when it comes into the radius
The last part might take some time, but would work
but for simplistic purposes yours works

These guys make awesome art for Mods (Items, New Blocks and Mobs)
I will be using them soon
I'm Starting to be known as a Balancer, A.K.A. I'm starting to become pessimist
I think it's a pretty good idea. Perhaps go for practicality over realism, however, and allow the player to NAME magnets (e.g. House, Mine, Statue, Beach House). Then when you're holding the compass, it'd say what magnet it's pointing to. You could cycle between them with RMB.

I'm not sure if that would be hard to impliment, but it would make it really handy

just sayn
I had an idea that did that, but it's gone now lol...gotta find it...brb

To paraphrase Nath99's idea, iron did effect what the magnet pointed to, but it was pretty complicated and either overpowered, or just an annoyance.
