The Nether is supposed to be a barren hellscape. Adding trees woud ruin that vibe.
I disagree. There are plenty of examples of trees existing in barren hellscapes.
The Zaqqum that is in Jahannam, which is part of the Islamic faith
The seventh circle of Hell from Dante's Inferno
South Dakota (anyone who has been to South Dakota knows what I'm talking about)
Really the list goes on and on. I would say the design of the trees is the most important part. That is the part of the idea I have problems with because the description just sounds kind of boring.
I would instead model it after the machineel, which is easily one of the most dangerous trees that exist. The sap causes blisters and can peel paint off of cars. The fruit is poisonous. Burning the wood creates incredibly toxic smoke. It seems like a perfect fit and those components could lead to dangerous new poisons or other mechanics.
