Now that bees are being planned to be added I think spices as well as a spicing station should be added! They would be used to add status effects, and they would be used on food, and cannot be eaten directly by the player.
Some suggestions for spices:
Honey-Absorption, can be used on bread, apples, cookies, pumpkin pie and cake.
Garlic-Resistance, can be used on bread.
Mint- Jump boost, can be used on bread and cake.
Ginger- Regeneration, can be used on bread, pumkin pie, cookies, and cake.
Cinnamon- Speed, can be used on bread, pumkin pie, cake, cookies and apples.
Vanilla-Saturation, can be used on bread, pumkin pie, apples, and cake.
Chilli Powder- Fire Resistance, can be used on meat.
Sugar-Haste, can be used on apples, cookies, cake, pumpkin pie, and bread.
The effect would be (of course) much weaker than drinking a potion, but it helps with pre-nether status effects.
They would be sold by the Wandering Trader, or be traded by a cook-like villager, who would use the spicing station or a smoker as its workstation.
I guess I am okay with this (not a huge fan of reducing the value of potions), on the condition that these seasoned food doesn't stack similar to how potions don't stack. Otherwise some of these would be really OP being able to get additional effects with each food item they eat and being able to stack them to 64.
