As the title says: lessen or negate fall damage by sneaking just before you land. this is actually a real landing technique, where you balance you balance the force you get by falling by bending your knees, which makes other areas of your leg help absorb the shock. I think adding this would help make the game better.
In real life you can only safely fall for something like 2 seconds. After that, you're absorbing so much force on impact that everything breaks no matter what you do to mitigate. To make this reasonable, you'll have to add a range to this idea, after which you still just die immediately.
That said, I'm not sure we need even more fall protection...we have featherfalling and slowfall magical effects, we have hay bales (reduction) and slimeblocks/water (negation), and we have elytra (falling with style).
Alright, when you made this suggestion, it's clear you were thinking of the real world and how it could translate to the game. But, another question you should ask yourself is this--is it necessary? DuhDerp has already mentioned how there are plenty of more techniques and objects to make you fall slower, would this new technique add anything to the game that actually increased the value of the player's experience?
Plus, as DuhDerp also said, bending your knees, while useful, has very little effect on long falls. Also, when Steve sneaks it doesn't bend his knees, it actually bends his hip, which means that it would actually be MORE painful to be in Steve's position--even a shortfall could dislocate something or break a hip, or even break a vertebrate and therefore cause paralysis.
Nice thought, but I think this is better left out of Minecraft.
