Many of you have probably seen or participated in the various debates surrounding introducing guns, vehicles, and other types of creations that might tend to distort the game in a way not originally intended.
What immediately struck me upon looking at some of these arguments against and for these ideas is the variety of them. As I view Minecraft as the purest of sandbox games, I view any attempt to nerf the players ability to create their own playing world dimly. If you haven't seen, go check our Yahtzee's review on Minecraft, he sums up what I think on that subject -> you shape the game to your own tastes.
This is also seen in how different people play the game. Some have servers that feel more like WOW, others focus primarily on PVP, and yet some build gigantic creations like the 1:1 model of the starship Enterprise.
So I repeat again: Why try to limit the scope of Minecraft? The whole point of the game is to give an almost limitless playground to you.
However, 1.5 million people have bought the game and since getting even 3 people to agree on who is to do the dishes in an apartment is difficult, the attempt to get even a majority of these people to agree on what to do is a complete waste of time.
So in true Minecraft tradition, give the player choice in the matter by divvying up the system into epochs.
Traditional Minecraft: What is available now, pretty much stone age to iron age. Redstone can still be used for electrical circuits because the ancient Babylonians had batteries a couple thousand years ago.
Dark Ages:
(Middle Ages style)Similar but with a few notable differences.
1st: daylight is 2 min shorter and night is 2 min longer.
2nd: Monster spawning density is much larger.
3rd: Monsters will seek out and destroy light sources (ie will attempt to attack a lit base instead of wondering aimlessly)
4th: A couple different monsters and ores -> nothing too different: Mobs: Undead Wizard(shoots lighting), Witch(can fly or walk on ground), dragon(same as witch). Ores: Marble, silver, oil, other gem types
Imperial Ages:
The intro of blunderbusses and other basic gunpowder weaponry. Gunpowder can now be mined and mixed using sand, saltpeter, and charcoal. Mobs switch to pigmen which are neutral until attacked or boarmen who are always hostile. Mobs in Dark Ages and Traditional will now only spawn in caves and below ground. Pigmen and boarmen are hostile to trad. mobs. Trains can now be built using minecart tracks. Hot air balloons can now be built, but watchout for DRAGONS!
Modern Age:
The intro to vehicles and higher powered weapons. Said weapons needed to destroy vehicles that hostile boarmen and pigmen will be using. Also, there would be a way to create mobile floating structures. Perhaps rockets to get to the moon. More advanced clothing options along with new materials such as Uranium.
Overall then to keep balance, individual maps would be kept at a certain Epoch. For example when you went to seed a map, you could assign an Epoch to the map. The Epoch would be always be attached to that map set then. This way if you want to play reg. Minecraft you can, if you want to zip around in your hovercraft and strafe pigmen you can as well.
Ideas?
Disclaimer: In no way am I demanding these changes made in anywhere the near future. As a programmer myself, I understand the complexity in making even small changes to a program as large as this. However, it would be an interesting feature to include in a later patch to the game once it is release or perhaps in a Minecraft II?
I don't see any of this being implemented into the game, as a mod, maybe, but I don't think many people will want spaceships and the like in this game
Still a good idea for a (very difficult to code :tongue.gif:) mod

And..... this idea is cool But dont see it getting implemented But Again Great idea

I thought more like age of empires :biggrin.gif:[/quote]
Exactly what I was thinking, something like AOE or EE. Certain components are created or removed depending on where you are at in the game epoch wise.
The spaceship thing came from an idea I saw for a moon biome.
OR the Epoch system could be set up as an upgrade system. For example the first 64 layers you can did through but to go through bedrock you would have to "Epoch up" to the Imperial Age or something.
Mostly, I don't see the point in restricting what the player can do by assigning an arbitrary "Well this doesn't follow the current era minecraft is in"
I think pushing him towards mod support would be better as I'd bet the majority of people could stop bugging him to implement this and that as it could get modded in way easier and survive a few updates, if done right atleast. But that's just my view Oo
I could see this being a "mod". However, I think it adds enough functionality to the game to be considered more as a DLC or the beginnings of MC II.
I also think the advantage of this would be to silence a lot of people who keep screaming for new content. It could be implemented as follows:
1. basic Minecraft -> what we have now: this stays about the same (maybe a couple additional changes)
2. DLC 1: Dark Ages
3. DLC 2: Imperial Age
4. DLC 3: Modern Age
This allows suggestions from people to be used in the next DLC pack instead of being used to clog up Notch's inbox.
Also then you could play the game from any of the different DLC levels giving a massive variety of gameplay options.
