Except no one has any problem with the removal of duplication glitch because people thought that glitch is inherently broken. AFK fishing? people have been using it for years and there's no sign of stopping them. We can clearly see in this thread that players like AFK fishing as part of the game and doesn't want them to disappear. You don't have the right to impose how the community plays the game, the community does. Also, you're comparing apples and oranges mate.
But now Minecraft has a fish mob that the player can see, why aren't Mojang changing fishing? Maybe because Mojang subconsciously knows that changing old mechanic will always be bad and will result in chaos within the community.
"How can steve carries lots of heavy anvil, Steve should get slowness 3 and mining fatigue whenever he carries 1 anvil!"
You're missing the whole point. The problem with AFK Fishing isn't that "it makes no sense", or that "Mojang should change fishing" (Althrough they really should). It's that it breaks the game's balance without adding ANYTHING to the experience.
Afk fish farms provide infinite XP and infinite enchanted books for no price at all. All you need is to waste time not playing the game. Then you have lost a sense of pride and acomplishment by beating the post-diamond progression possibly before you even get diamond. On multiplayer this gives you an unfair advantage.
I’m really surprised so many people are defending afk fish farms, because on nearly every other topic it has come up 90% of people would want them removed. Maybe the topic of this thread triggered everyone who relies on the farms to beat the game, and everyone who agrees with the topic just shrugged it off and didn’t bother reading the comments.
Except no one has any problem with the removal of duplication glitch because people thought that glitch is inherently broken.
AFK Fishing Farms are also inherently broken. They allow for free items at little-to-no cost, which I would describe as "broken".
AFK fishing? people have been using it for years and there's no sign of stopping them.
There is a sign of stopping them. Simply remove the functionality required to build such a farm and then they will be stopped. In addition, many people are coming to the realization that, guess what? AFK Fish Farms are far too overpowered and break the game in a bad way.
We can clearly see in this thread that players like AFK fishing as part of the game and doesn't want them to disappear.
"Doesn't want" does not translate to "Shouldn't want." From what I'm seeing, a lot of people want this in the game because they consider it a "fair cheat" for some reason. Cheats are by definition unfair because they break the rules which judge fairness.
You don't have the right to impose how the community plays the game, the community does. Also, you're comparing apples and oranges mate.
Wrong. The community has no right to decide how they play the Vanilla game. What the community does have are privileges, like the ability to play in so many different styles and to use mods when need be. Mojang has every right to ignore the community's ideas in any way they like and they have every right to take away our privileges. The only right we have is to buy the game or to not buy the game.
But now Minecraft has a fish mob that the player can see, why aren't Mojang changing fishing? Maybe because Mojang subconsciously knows that changing old mechanic will always be bad and will result in chaos within the community.
Or maybe because Mojang hasn't considered the issue yet and is coming up with a solution. You have now stooped to the level of assuming Mojang's intent based on their lack of action on a particular issue.
"How can steve carries lots of heavy anvil, Steve should get slowness 3 and mining fatigue whenever he carries 1 anvil!"
This is perhaps the only fair point you've made on this forum thus far.

It puts people who can afford to keep their computer running at an unfair advantage, negates any drawbacks of fishing (Apart from not being able to do anything while fishing), and makes treasure enchantments too easy to obtain (Just keep the game idling and do something else. Sooner or later you'll get it fo no effort), and generally provides awfully good rewards at the cost of some Redstone, an Iron Trapdoor, some string, and 2 Tripwire Hooks. No... here I go again.
I'm aware of what they do, I am not new.
"Then you have lost a sense of pride and acomplishment by beating the post-diamond progression possibly before you even get diamond." No, that is how YOU would feel. If an AFKers doing it, they most likely have done it before thus proving that they don't mind nor care. As far as progression. By the time any AFKer is done with their fishing, I have already gotten diamonds, and enchanted. With the implemented grindstone this is even faster because you do not have to use just books. You can enchant the same boots or whatnot over and over.
You know why? They first have to build it, then once it is built, they have to stand there. There are penalties for using it. You cannot do anything else while using it, and even if you do it 8 hours straight while sleeping, the return isn't what you think it is. It is random. I know. On a realm I am on, my best friend uses one, and he still cannot keep up with me. It's allowed so I don't have to do everything for him as well.
"On multiplayer this gives you an unfair advantage." What unfair advantage? There is none. Especially on a server. The people that have already been there for months or longer have every advantage there is. To most of us, it is a disadvantage for the AFKer because they usually lack the skill and reflexes to fight back, which is why this all matters right? Gear? Not to mention, you catch an AFKer, unless on a protected plot they die when we find them. Thus thwarting the fishing.
As for your last paragraph, this forum represents a very small, and mostly like minded people. None of the people who have series on Youtube who have followings are here. A lot of people are on other forums or reddit. I will go out on a limb and say most people do not even interact in a written forum concerning MC. When you break it down, your 90% is actually way smaller than that. There are the single player people (Me), the people that do not care (Me), the servers that rely on it for economy (Also me) The other servers where no one cares (Again me), Servers where PVP is off (Me) and then there are the servers when it is frowned upon and or banned (Also play those too) YOU are responsible for where and how you play. It's almost like no one here has ever played any MMO besides MC Servers. Unless you are on a server at launch, the entire server is advantaged against you. Having to "Toss" is part of the game. Also, gearing up with no effort, is apart of every MMO. In most, it is the reward for playing so long, because starting over is boring for most people that have done it over and over.
You have to come to realize, anti afk farms are the minority. They have servers for you.
Should we go through all the things one by one and explain how each item they receive in a fish farm affects you when it doesn't, or should we just come out and say it was just about the enchanted books and you can clearly gear yourself out in the time it takes for them to get food setup, base setup, build the farm, and fish it for 3 straight days in hopes that they got lucky enough to be anywhere close or finished to have great gear? I feel like a lot of people do not really know how these things work.
They do not "fix" it, does not affect me personally. They do "fix" it, it does not affect me personally except for the one realm I play on with my friends and family. That happens, sucks for my best friend because I am not pulling both our weight So no, it's not about, "triggered everyone who relies on the farms to beat the game."
Wrong. The community has no right to decide how they play the Vanilla game.
And there you have it folks. This thread is moot because the community has no right to decide. Suggestion threads are now pointless. Thus, no matter the opinion, since it is in the game, it stays.
I'm sure there is a bucket/spigot plugin that will boot you for not moving after 5 mins, play on one of those servers and let everyone else play the game however they want. There is nothing more I can't stand that people who go around telling other people how to live their life or play their game. You are literally the worst.
I remember something a few years ago when mojang were talking of altering spawners to effectively nerf mob farms. Yeah that went down like a lead balloon and they backed down. Same thing will happen.
The issue is a BALANCE issue, and not a "I don't like that other people do this" issue. After all, I don't mind mob farms or Iron farms, because they simply save time.
It puts people who can afford to keep their computer running at an unfair advantage,At the risk of their own PC's life. negates any drawbacks of fishing (Apart from not being able to do anything while fishing),There are drawbacks to fishing? I'd say not doing anything else is a drawback huge at that and makes treasure enchantments too easy to obtain (Just keep the game idling and do something else.I'm sorry but that is generally how all automatic farms work, except with them you have the advantage choice of moving or not. Sooner or later you'll get it fo no effort), and generally provides awfully good rewards at the cost of some Redstone, an Iron Trapdoor, some string, and 2 Tripwire Hooks. Please tell me how this affects you personally. Consider that even a lowly spawner farm or semi-automatic crop harvester will potentially be more expensive nowhere near as powerful products. You have clearly built neither on small scale. Also, a simple villager breeder will pump out villagers to your hearts content in which I might add at this time, you can still choose the things they sell. Put this with some simple farms, and you are pumping out specific books, at essentially no real cost other than standing in an area, and picking up loot, and trading.
The issue is a BALANCE issue, and not a "I don't like that other people do this" issue. After all, I don't mind mob farms or Iron farms, because they simply save time.
Saying it's a balance issue is complete bull. Why is everyone else concerned about how balanced the game I'm playing. Like I said, use a anti afk or anti afk fishing plugin for bucket/spigiot and be happy you experience is 'balanced'. I did a quick search, there are a few plugins, problem solved Now stop complaining.
Unless you keep it running 24/7 or you computer is old, it's not really a big issue.
Most obviously in terms of drawbacks, the fact that you have to pay attention to the bobber and the water to see if it catches something.
It's not a case of "It affects me badly personally". I'm going to put an hyperbolic example to you: If a crafting recipe that turned 1 Dirt into 64 Diamonds were added, would it affect balance? Yes, because diamonds are intended to be rare. Can you opt to simply ignore the recipe? Yes. Does it's very existence affect the game's balance negatively? Yes, because it makes an item intended to be rare so common it's not even funny. My point is that it affects the game's balance negatively, and adds nothing to the game beyond AFK fishing itself.
Yes, I have built both on a small scale. I'd say it's actually easier to do so, but not optimal.
Where do Villager breeders relate here? Plus, THAT case is due to how breeding mechanics work, which, importantly enough, is needed for purposes beyond Villager breeders. AFK Fishing's mechanics could be removed without being even a big annoyance.
Saying it's a balance issue is complete bull. Why is everyone else concerned about how balanced the game I'm playing. Like I said, use a anti afk or anti afk fishing plugin for bucket/spigiot and be happy you experience is 'balanced'. Because balance is key to good game design. Due to that, arguing "Don't do that if you don't like it" is a pretty weak argument.

Where did I say don't do it you don't like it? I said you can set up your own server with a plugin to prevent it, then ppl who play on that server don't have a choice to ignore it. Problem solved.
Did you ever think that some people don't have a lot of time or get bored/distracted easily? Like ppl with ADHD etc? Everyone is different and has a different play style, let them be. By your logic, modded minecraft is unbalanced and shouldn't be played. Being one of the best selling games of all time, I'm pretty sure minecraft doesn't suffer from bad game design.
I did a quick search, there are a few plugins, problem solved Now stop complaining.
This suggestion forum is for presenting and discussing ideas for vanilla Minecraft. You aren't permitted to use the existence of a mod to dismiss a suggestion.
Let's break this down and tell the truth. You're worried about an afker owning you in battle. There is literally no other excuse to be against someone having an advantage over you. I am here to tell you, with that attitude you're already owned. There are 4 people standing in front of you. You're fully geared. You get to choose which one you fight one on one. One is a person like me, we will call them "rusher." One is an AFKer. One is a person who has been on the server for over a year. One is a carbon copy of you and your skills. They are all identical in gear. Now point at the one you are going to face.
Not really- I don't play pvp. I want AFK Fishing Removed because it is an exploit... but we'll get to that later.
My main reply to this post is as follows- AFK Players have just the same PVP skills as anyone else, in that they could be useless or masters because most people who AFK do it when they are not going to be playing regardless. This could be when they are asleep or doing work, etc. They don't sacrifice playing time to AFK fish, so they play more or less the same as you, and should have more or less the same skills as you.
The wikipedia definition of an exploit is: In video games, an exploit is the use of a bug or glitches, game system, rates, hit boxes, speed or level design etc. by a player to their advantage in a manner not intended by the game's designers.
Note, it mentions in a manner not intended by the game's designers, not by the game's community. So an exploit is to be determined by Mojang, not us.
But now Minecraft has a fish mob that the player can see, why aren't Mojang changing fishing? Maybe because Mojang subconsciously knows that changing old mechanic will always be bad and will result in chaos within the community.
I doubt it (Combat, Modding, Oceans, Villagers... these are all things Mojang has changed to the anger of some but for the greater good). I agree fishing should be updated, I made a suggestion about it here, but I doubt Mojang purposefully excluded it in the name of not changing a mechanic. Because why would they then ruin Iron Farms?
"How can steve carries lots of heavy anvil, Steve should get slowness 3 and mining fatigue whenever he carries 1 anvil!"
This is not an exploit, this is an intentional break from realism in the name of gameplay Mojang knew they were making Steve able to carry an anvil with mining fatigue... the game is better for it. Mojang did not know people would abuse fishing rod ticks to spam down the rod onto a single block of water and get infinite fish/treasure. The fishing system was designed to be somewhat based in realism hence my argument. I know the system is not totally realistic but it does its best, and I don't think Mojang wrote the code with AFK Fish Farms in mind.
I'm sure there is a bucket/spigot plugin that will boot you for not moving after 5 mins, play on one of those servers and let everyone else play the game however they want. There is nothing more I can't stand that people who go around telling other people how to live their life or play their game. You are literally the worst.
Then why did Mojang have everyone to switch to 1.9 combat? Mojang is able to change the game if they perceive the change for the better. And I think removing an exploit is for the better.
"Then you have lost a sense of pride and acomplishment by beating the post-diamond progression possibly before you even get diamond." No, that is how YOU would feel. If an AFKers doing it, they most likely have done it before thus proving that they don't mind nor care. As far as progression. Wait... are you staying up all night playing the game while your friend is asleep AFKing? I think the more likely prospect is your friend is AFKing while you are both playing (in the day), in which case I agree, but most people who AFK plan it out. They get the same hours of sleep as someone who doesn't only they are being "productive" in Minecraft while they are asleep.
Yes, the players who have been on longer have an advantage. But it is not an unfair advantage because they've earned that advantage by playing the game. Again... how does the AFKer lack skills or reflexes? I think you are basing this analogy entirely off your friend who seems to not be playing the game at all. Most AFKers are just as skilled as all of us, only they have a bonus while they sleep.
I will give you your last point... if you catch an AFKer you can kill them. But this is rare... most servers protect you around your base, and even on those that don't, it is rare you would happen to stumble on someone's base at random.
One again I feel like you don't understand how people can just sleep through their AFKing, and still accomplish everything you do during the day.

You have to come to realize, anti afk farms are the minority. They have servers for you.
This is a valid argument. Neither of us has an accurate poll of every Minecraft player and their opinion about AFK Fish Farms.
This is when things get really, really complicated.
And there you have it folks. This thread is moot because the community has no right to decide. Suggestion threads are now pointless. Thus, no matter the opinion, since it is in the game, it stays.
Hey I tried.
Does the community have any real say? I suppose it doesn't. When so many rallied to remove the hunger bar or keep spamclick combat, Mojang didn't listen. They did what they felt was best. Ultimately, this entire conversation is pointless. I think I speak for C1ff, AMPPL, and Wolf in that we aren't arguing in the event Mojang shows up here and considers removing AFK Fish Farms, but to try and convince those that support it they are bad. And you are arguing vice versa, trying to convince us otherwise.
Mojang has all the power in the Vanilla Game. But there is an opportunity for the community to be heard. This is a project known as the Community Revamp. It is a mod run by the community where everyone votes in a democratic fashion on things to be added, in this sense, the community holds the power. I am bringing it up here because you've raised an interesting argument, suggestion threads are now pointless. To which I'd say they always have been pointless. We can suggest something to Mojang but there are not guaranteed, no matter how many "supports" that suggestion gets, Mojang will like it. The Community Revamp was created to provide the suggestions endorsed by the community a place in the game. I encourage everyone not already a part to join, even if you have a different opinion regarding AFK Fish Farms than I.
So you are correct, Mojang holds all the power. The community has no right to decide the vanilla game.
And there you have it folks. This thread is moot because the community has no right to decide. Suggestion threads are now pointless. Thus, no matter the opinion, since it is in the game, it stays.
Hey I tried.
Congratulations, you have managed to remain blissfully ignorant of the reasons why this forum exists because you assume that we make suggestions here to get them implemented by Mojang overnight.
The suggestions forum is another privilege we have. (I guess from a certain point it's a right in that free speech is a right, but whatever) While Mojang does not read this specific forum, we are allowed to discuss the features in the game and suggest changes that could be made. One way in which this forum is useful is to develop ideas before they are posted to Mojang's Feedback website or the r/minecraftsuggestions subreddit. Mojang gives us the privilege of using those other methods to suggest ideas to them. That does not mean we have control over what ends up in the game, that just means we can influence the decision slightly.
There is nothing more I can't stand that people who go around telling other people how to live their life or play their game. You are literally the worst.
Yes, because I hate it when people won't let me play Minecraft with glitches and exploits that allow me to propel myself lightyears ahead of players who play the game by the rules. Those people are literally the worst.
Games have rules because, without those rules, the game falls apart. If you can just use exploits to get around rules, you are ruining the feeling of accomplishment and you are diminishing the meaning of winning the game. If you like breaking rules, we have cheats to satisfy you directly without leaving in a crappy farm that can't be blocked by server owners, makes no sense lore-wise and doesn't deserve to remain in the game.
It is a balance issue, and no, I will not use plugins to balance a game that Mojang is supposed to balance. If you would rather play an unbalanced game, then mods, plugins, and datapacks exist exactly for the purpose of unbalancing the game. That's not me being hypocritical, this is me pointing out that you have gotten Mojang's job wrong.
Mojang's job is not to build the game that best suits Phlexor or any other person's unhealthy taste for exploitable mechanics that make the rest of the game redundant. Their job is to build a balanced and fair game that rewards players for actually putting forth effort and not for using loopholes and exploits.
"On multiplayer this gives you an unfair advantage." What unfair advantage? There is none.
Do you actually read anything we say? Access to Mending books alone should be enough of an advantage far into the early game.
You have to come to realize, anti afk farms are the minority. They have servers for you.
Truly amazing. You have decided to escape actual reasoning and hide behind consensus because you've lost the argument.
Claiming you have a consensus is not an argument, it is a bullying tactic. The majority can be wrong for many reasons: misconception, deceit, corruption, etc. Bringing up the number of people who agree with you is just showing us how many people will "get mad" if we fix an exploit in the game that should have never existed in the first place.
The heavy damage done to balance is just all the more incentive to remove AFK Fish Farms. That being said, I wouldn't care if these were AFK Dirt Farms, they are an exploit and shouldn't exist. Items in the game, however inexpensive, should not be given to the player for zero effort. Stealing pennies from the cash register is not any less stealing than if they were twenty-dollar bills.
My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.

Then what about automated Iron Golem farms? People got really mad when those stopped working for 1 snapshot a few years ago (Mojang made iron a player-only drop in 14w03a for 1.8), but it was worked around immediately by people like Docm77 (using potions of harming).
That's the thing: no matter how hard you try to anti-automate things, ways will be found to circumvent it.
People have made 3*3 auto-cow and auto-sheep farms. People have automated sugar cane, pumpkins, melons, and every other crop in the game.
There is no way to remove automated farms that give people items for "zero effort". Other than the time it takes to build the farm. And in multiplayer, the time it takes to fix potential pranks. And the time it takes to fix the farms after half the patches in the game.
Also, many of the most vocal members of the Minecraft community are the people that use or make Auto-fishers and other auto-farms. Think the HermitCraft and ZipKrowd , SethBling, anyone else that builds on a massive scale in survival. Removing these farms, especially because they aren't, in my and many other's opinions, unbalanced or cheaty, would be massively detrimental to the game.

At least those reward creativity, would be too difficult to fix properly, and would just plain hurt the game. On top of allowing the Player to do other things while the farms are working (Which is also why they're worth tolerating). The same cannot be said about AFK fishing.
It would only be detrimental to players who spend a lot of time AFK fishing, particularly when considering that AFK fishing doesn't even provide building resources, apart from Mending boks.
By definition, AFK fishing farms being unbalanced is the reason to remove them. In fact, you've said nothing that proves otherwise, apart from saying "But mob grinders...", which is quite the false equivalency, and, to add a VERY weak argument, the "But these big figures do it...".
You're missing the whole point. The problem with AFK Fishing isn't that "it makes no sense", or that "Mojang should change fishing" (Althrough they really should). It's that it breaks the game's balance without adding ANYTHING to the experience.
Suggestions:
New Death Animations. "Mr Amppl50, I don't feel so good" -fishg
Lead Ore
Wind revamp and hot air balloons.
What balance is being broken?
Here we go again...

Maybe the topic of this thread triggered everyone who relies on the farms to beat the game, and everyone who agrees with the topic just shrugged it off and didn’t bother reading the comments.
AFK Fishing Farms are also inherently broken. They allow for free items at little-to-no cost, which I would describe as "broken".
There is a sign of stopping them. Simply remove the functionality required to build such a farm and then they will be stopped. In addition, many people are coming to the realization that, guess what? AFK Fish Farms are far too overpowered and break the game in a bad way.
"Doesn't want" does not translate to "Shouldn't want." From what I'm seeing, a lot of people want this in the game because they consider it a "fair cheat" for some reason. Cheats are by definition unfair because they break the rules which judge fairness.
Or maybe because Mojang hasn't considered the issue yet and is coming up with a solution. You have now stooped to the level of assuming Mojang's intent based on their lack of action on a particular issue.
This is perhaps the only fair point you've made on this forum thus far.
My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.

Sooner or later you'll get it fo no effort), and generally provides awfully good rewards at the cost of some Redstone, an Iron Trapdoor, some string, and 2 Tripwire Hooks. Consider that even a lowly spawner farm or semi-automatic crop harvester will potentially be more expensive nowhere near as powerful products.

No... here I go again.
I recommend you read my last reply also.
And there you have it folks. This thread is moot because the community has no right to decide. Suggestion threads are now pointless. Thus, no matter the opinion, since it is in the game, it stays.
Hey I tried.
The issue is a BALANCE issue, and not a "I don't like that other people do this" issue. After all, I don't mind mob farms or Iron farms, because they simply save time.

I think I changed my mind, I agree that it's hard to remove this exploit.
It really depends on the rules and regulations of a server, either they allow it or not.
If you play single player, I suggest don't do this or else it will make survival magic vanish and it will make your game boring.
I LOVE that. Brilliant. Survival magic. Awesome. Kudos.

This suggestion forum is for presenting and discussing ideas for vanilla Minecraft. You aren't permitted to use the existence of a mod to dismiss a suggestion.

This is not an exploit, this is an intentional break from realism in the name of gameplay Mojang knew they were making Steve able to carry an anvil with mining fatigue... the game is better for it. Mojang did not know people would abuse fishing rod ticks to spam down the rod onto a single block of water and get infinite fish/treasure. The fishing system was designed to be somewhat based in realism hence my argument. I know the system is not totally realistic but it does its best, and I don't think Mojang wrote the code with AFK Fish Farms in mind.
Then why did Mojang have everyone to switch to 1.9 combat? Mojang is able to change the game if they perceive the change for the better. And I think removing an exploit is for the better.
Wait... are you staying up all night playing the game while your friend is asleep AFKing? I think the more likely prospect is your friend is AFKing while you are both playing (in the day), in which case I agree, but most people who AFK plan it out. They get the same hours of sleep as someone who doesn't only they are being "productive" in Minecraft while they are asleep.
One again I feel like you don't understand how people can just sleep through their AFKing, and still accomplish everything you do during the day.
This is a valid argument. Neither of us has an accurate poll of every Minecraft player and their opinion about AFK Fish Farms.
This is when things get really, really complicated.
Do you actually read anything we say? Access to Mending books alone should be enough of an advantage far into the early game.
I'm very alone in my Minecraft worlds as I don't have a very good internet connection to run a server. If you're like me, you might be interested in my Posse mod suggestion.
(she/they)
Get my 1.10.2 modpack :D, Quae Machinis (Machines and Things)
Have a nice day!
