I think that Minecraft needs a new, less common, biome. A volcanic island. These biomes occur in open ocean and are a number of chunks big. These islands consist of sand on top and at most beaches, sandstone in some areas, clay spots in random parts across the top of the island, dirt at random spots with the occassional tree, stone on the inside of the island, which rim the island's large lava pools (An excellent source of lava powered smelting!)which are at the core of all volcanic islands, and it's own unique resources which make it worthwhile: pummice, black sand, and white sand. Pummice is found at the rim of the islands, often overlooking cliffs to the ocean below.
Pummice looks like a lighter version of with some transparent spots through the holes, allowing for a window of sorts, and sounds like stone when walked over. It allows light through at 3 levels lower than the input light (torch of light level 8 goes through pummice wall, light of level 5 comes out.). Pummice is easily destroyed by creepers and can even be harvested with hands due to it's fragile nature. It's redeeming feature is the ability to create concrete. By creating this shape where sand represents pummice. Concrete is a lighter colored block which is more durable than bricks, but less so than obsidian, placing it just slightly faster mined than redstone. Concrete's use is simply as a tough building material to keep monsters out and block creeper detonations to a degree.
Lastly, black sand and white sand are the final ideas I have here. Black sand behaves identically to normal sand except that it is black, and can create black sandstone with the same recipe as normal sandstone. Likewise, black sandstone can also create black sandstone slabs. White sand behaves identically also, save it is a powdery white, creates white sandstone, and in turn creates white sandstone slabs. Both create normal glass if smelted. These merely are colorful substitutes for normal materials, making them more of a collector's item of "Hey I found a volcanic island! Don't believe me? Proof right there!". Both are found on small strips of beaches around the perimeter of the island.
great idea i have allwaysed wanted volcanoes but if they were just there like the mountains they would seem out of place but as islands gives them their own little place. Also the lava should go down to bedrock and then spread out in a lake like a circle that has d= like 15-30 blocks and has rare minerals?
Does every good looking island have to have a volcano ready to erupt and destroy a whole village? But still I support.
It's less of a volcano, though it is exposed at the surface in some sections, but is more of a pool of lava inside the island. Resources spawning it as it is normally around it.

I's a volcanic island, which doesn't necessarily mean it has a volcano. It's a core lava pool structure which goes down to sea level. Because the island already has rare resources, I think the mineral spawning should be the same as on normal land.
Perhaps making this with the natural disasters mod would be interesting, so that near volcanic islands there was a higher chance of a new volcano, or an earthquake happening. It would also be neat if the island periodically went off, replenishing the resources.
This has already been suggested, please use the search button, google, or even Kira's stickied thread at the top of the suggestions thread.

I am just a guy looking for good suggestions that are original, creative, and match the theme of Mine-craft. I have some mob ideas that I need help forming which is a community project.
