I was going to post these in an already existing thread about new weapons, however I’ve found such threads to be full of modern weaponry or inappropriately out of the minecraft theme. And as I wrote, I found I had quite a bit to share, so I give you my ideas in hopes Notch will notice and approve so that the game may become more in depth and overall improve crafting thoughtfulness and usefulness of various items. If you like the items and want to see them in the game in the (hopefully near) future please post and say so, the more positive feedback the greater the possibility of inclusion. As this thread it about new ideas, I welcome any alterations you may propose about my existing designs, however I must ask that inappropriate and ridiculous ideas are not posted here, thank you.
Explosive Arrow
I think it would be interesting to see an 'explosive arrow’.. However they may become easy to make resulting in utter chaos. I’d suggest however that said arrow would have a 1/4 chance to destroy the block it lands on, and dealing 1.5-2x damage of a normal arrow when hitting a mob or player (recomended of 2x damage, taking 4 hearts which requires three shots to kill a full healthed player, but more powerful then the Crossbow mentioned bellow). Cannot be picked up for obvious reasons ( --> )
Makes use of gunpowder, adding an entire tnt block just doesn’t make sense as the arrow could not carry it, nor does it blow up the same as a tnt block. The extra feather is for 'stability' of the arrow after adding more weight... the real reason is to make these arrows more costly.
Flaming Arrow
They already exist.. kind of, by shooting an arrow through lava. This is however not very practical. A fire arrow should deal normal damage, plus damage (and sound/reaction) of walking into fire (eg bumping into a tree on fire.. if your blind), also the arrow should have a 1/4 chance to ignite the mob/player/block which will need to be extinguished by water, sorry no stop drop and roll ! And of course, if the block is burnable it will instantly combust releasing hellfire demons upon the world and surrounding victims ... ! or it could just burn like normal? Arrow cannot be picked up as it would burn its own shaft. (Possible restriction, can only be fired when near a source of flame.. easily enough to throw a torch down near you, the down side, your enemy players can quickly identify where you are with the light around you for a counter attack.)
Probably more common than the Explosive Arrow, however still an effort to make. Really not overly worth it unless your foe lives in a log cabin or a tree house. May require an addition item other then bucket of water to assist in putting out fires on roof tops to balance this weapon. Extra feather for the same reason as the Explosive arrow. Pitch may be required in the use for torches as well as now you can smelt wood as a substitute coal. Possibly resulting in the current torch crafting to be a temporary over night torch, whereas Pitch and a stick would yield the current equivalent of an everlasting light source. But that’s not a weapon (or maybe it can be.. Flaming sticks are always fun to hit someone you dislike with?) Another use of Pitch would be to lay it on the ground and light it with the flint and tinder or Flaming Arrow... think medieval castles. Pitch on a block would burn regardless of the blocks ability to burn, however combustible blocks will begin to burn after the pitch has burned. Pitch would have to burn for at least 5 minutes as a day cycle is 20 minutes, with a max burn time of 1 day. Could possibly be random for each patch of pitch, or a predetermined time. These times are only my suggestion, and as this is off the top of my head while I write this, could easily be very unbalanced, but the general idea is sound. Pitch fire can spread to adjacent pitch, And the fire from pitch may cause combustible items adjacent to burn, while the pitch has to fully extinguish before the block underneath will begin burning.
Extended Armoury:
The Staff:
A long reach weapon, dealing 0.5-0.75x damage of a wooden sword, slightly more pushback then the wooden sword, somewhat efficient to make in comparison to the sword, as a sword requires 4 planks of wood in order to make the sword with spare sticks, the Staff only requires 3 planks. Uses, this weapon was thought to be a protection against those nasty hisses ( ), would work well to be able to hit the creeper before it gets to close, and a greater pushback to keep it further away. Won’t help much if you don’t see him coming though.
Suggested Crafting: The Staff
[] []
[] []
[] []
The Halberd
Basically a sword with extended reach, however almost too easy to make in comparison to a sword. May be made with any material available for a sword except wood. To balance this against a sword, the Halberd should only do 0.75x damage of the equivalent sword and material. And reach one block (one metre) further then a sword. Reduced damage is a simulation of the extra time it would take to swing the halberd. Eg, If a sword swung 3 times, it would take an equivalent 4 swings with the Halberd to do equal damage.
Suggested Crafting: The Halberd
[]
[]
[] []
Where can be stone, iron, gold, diamond. Wood is excluded as it would be as effective as the Staff, however wood may be included for the concern of aesthetics (but I’m not sure why you would want to look at a wooden halberd?)
Tool/Weapon Combinations
The Battle Axe
The only reason I can see for a battle axe is to be able to wield an axe in combat with an equivalent damage to that of a sword. I do not know how the damage of an axe differs from the sword, but i assume it would be less. Therefore I suggest the Battle Axe! With a little more material the Battle Axe has the same durability and speed properties as an axe of equivalent material when used to chop items such as tree's, in addition this axe can be wielded with the same durability and damage against mobs/players as a sword of equal material.
Suggested Crafting: The Battle Axe
[] []
This works nicely, as sticks are plentiful enough they can be ignored. It does however take 5 materials to make the Battle Axe. A regular axe requires 3 materials, and a sword requires 2. This weapon yields same functionality as making individual tools, however combining them reduces durability to material cost ratio. The bright side of this tool is, you can carry a lot of them and not worry about a sword if you’re on the hunt for wood. I would choose a Battle Axe over an Axe if I was in a dangerous forest. An alternate crafting would be to use string as shown below, from my experience string is quite difficult to obtain early on, and might be some time before you can find it, and once you do you can either use it in a bow or fishing rod. It is my hope that string becomes a rare recourse and not easy to obtain and therefore should be incorporated in advanced items/tool/weapons. So as an alternate crafting..
Suggested Alternate Crafting: The Battle Axe
[] []
Where is string. Currently bows do not have durability, making this quite an ineffective use of string, however the benefits may outweigh the cost, and providing a way for the game to drain growing stocks of string laying around (instead of wasting 9 sting for wool).
The Warhammer
I was thinking along the lines of combining a Pick and a Mace, similar to the Battle Axe. The Warhammer would do the same for mining and fighting. However the idea is a little odd to me, however I would like the idea to combine weapon elements into both picks and axes for all the reasons stated above in the Battle Axe section. So ill show my basic idea for this Warhammer.
Suggested Crafting: The Warhammer []
[] []
Suggested Alternate Crafting: The Warhammer []

where is string.
It would look a little off bashing at your precious diamonds with a hammer, but that’s something I could deal with. Looking at those crafting tables, it looks more like an axe/pick combination? Possibly that may be a multi-tasked tool. Again if string remains rare, ie from spiders only, then using the string alternate would be ideal.
Now for something a little more out there...
The Spear
Reaching 2 blocks (2 metres) further than a sword, doing 0.75x damage of a sword, 0.25x when used against the undead ( and as well as zombie pigmen ), this reduced damage against undead mobs seems right to me as poking a stick through a skeleton won’t do an awful lot to him in comparison to hacking at his ankles. The Spear has a long reach, and like its brother the Staff, the Spear should have a side effect against the ever annoying creeper. Unlike the staff however, which is designed to ward the creeper off to keep him at a safe distance, the Spear will detonate the creeper instantly where he stands when pierced. If at maximum range with a spear, a creeper explosion will do minimal damage to you, however your lawn will suffer major cosmetic damage. This makes the spear useful in certain situations. Possibly in addition, the spear may also be thrown taking triple the durability of a normal hit. Causing a creeper to detonate should cause 5 times a normal durability use of the spear.
Suggested Crafting: The Spear Tip
[] []
[] []
[] [] []
where is the Spear Shaft, and ]" title="-<->" /> is the Spear Tip and any material can be used that can be used as a sword. Possibly with the exception of wood.
The Throwing Hatchet
Forgive me if this is a little rough idea, it has just come to mind as I’m typing. The basic concept is a small throwing axe (maybe knife). Uses my ever favourite string to give the weapon a slight rarity value. Maybe a similar ark to the bow and arrow, defiantly not a further arc, probably less. Consumes the axe if it hits a mob/player, retrievable like arrows if missed. Does not require a weapon to use.. making it a unique ranged weapon (your enemy could pick them up to use on you if you miss and if they are quick enough). After thinking more about how difficult it might be to obtain, damage dealt could be equal, possibly a minor amount more than a bow and arrow.
Small enough to be done by hand, however the use of string prohibits this weapon to early on and also limit how many you can make. Possible alteration to increase difficulty to make by adding another limited resource (feathers - may be hard to obtain some days) and forcing it to need a crafting table.
Possible damage scaling scheme with variable recourses used for the blade, ie ?flint? > stone > iron > diamond. An Arrows damage would lay between stone and iron in that sequence for a comparison.
The Crossbow
Effectively more material then a bow to make, slightly higher damage (say 1.5x that of a bow), a further flight arc than the bow. Drawbacks, cannot fire special projectiles such as the Explosive and Flaming Arrows described above (only basic arrows)
where is the Crossbow Stock, and is the Crossbow Cord
As it is now 4am and I’ve spent probably a good 4-5 hours on this, I’m going to finish off here as I have a mental block.
Please feel free to post your support for some or all of these weapons to be added to the game by Notch, if there is enough positive attention he will likely go ahead with it. All weapons here have been thought out by me, however I may not have been the first to come up with said designs, I’ve posted as my own thread as I want to have the entire thread to my various ideas for game inclusions and peoples input, this is not a thread for everyone to post their unique ideas, I’m trying to keep the weapons to an acceptable appropriate level.. Redstone and diamonds should not make light sabres.
Remember, feel free to post alterations to the weapons I suggest, feel free to post ideas of weapons, feel free to support any of my given ideas by posting. I do not want to see ridiculous weapon ideas please, the less appropriate this thread becomes the less chance of having the ideas here taken seriously. Thank you.
I will be continuing to add more ideas (not only weapons), remember to come check it out.

Each weapon should be unique and fill a specific niche in combat. Most of these are just swords that do a little more damage or slash a bit faster. My challenge to you is make up a weapon idea that would feel and play COMPLETELY different then a sword or bow and arrow. And small tweaks in stats do not make it feel or play differently.
And even though I sorta live by this quote when creating weapons/food items, I would like the idea of throwing hachet and throwing knife being two seperate things
Throwing Knife, Farther Range, Less Damage
Throwing Hachet, Lesser Range, More Damage

Thank you for recognising that this thread is 'refreshing and organised', it was my intention to spawn a thread which wasn’t random and all over the place. The ideas I am going to post here, are in my belief 'minecraft themed'. These suggestions should be taken as an idea for game inclusion, not just an idea for a Mod.
I apologise to everyone for the creation of yet another weapons thread, although i have taken the time to combine various ideas for weapons into one single, balanced list. However i have not directly copied formula for crafting, these were thought of by me. If by some circumstance they are similar to a previous idea (ie Rangecraft - I have not found this thread and will take a look shortly after posting this) then by all means reply with a note saying which idea is similar to another idea, and if you like them. I do not want to steal credit from others who have also devoted a fair piece of time to make a coherent list. That said please don’t link everything to every single similar items. (ie an entire thread about whether or not you should be able to make a combat axe is not a useful link, however linking to Rangecraft in respects to the Flaming arrow concept would be useful for those browsing seriously proposed concepts for the game)
I would also like to state that my balancing for the weapons should not be taken as the final outcome, I merely present my style of weapons, their bonuses, drawbacks and a way to have balance (as in reduced damage simulates longer swings). I do not pretend to understand the exact way minecraft is implemented, and it would be nice to see a system with weapons taking different amounts of time to swing/use as it would feel 'true' to the spirit of the weapon to be slow and hit harder, or fast swing and hit softer (? lol soft hitting weapons). If ever a system like this can be used for multiple weapons then by all means my proposed idea for reduced damage and equivalent attack speed should be removed.
I feel I have kept to your quote:
Quote from Muncher21 »
Each weapon should be unique and fill a specific niche in combat. Most of these are just swords that do a little more damage or slash a bit faster. My challenge to you is make up a weapon idea that would feel and play COMPLETELY different then a sword or bow and arrow. And small tweaks in stats do not make it feel or play differently.
As examples, the suggested Crossbow would deal more damage, and fly straighter then a bow. The Staff having fairly reduced damage would take forever to actually kill a creeper or other mob, opening a style of fighting by simply pushing the mob back ( off a cliff? :biggrin.gif: ). The Spear is rather unique as its durability reduces the more you use the Staff's advanced abilities (thrown or creeper detonation), this creates choice.. do you choose to expend your spear faster to achieve an advantage in combat, or simply make the spear last longer by making use of its extended reach only?
Last point ill make is the combination designs of a Battle Axe, again it provides choice.. whether or not to take swords and axes, or simply a few Battle Axes. Each has its own benefits, the Battle Axe provides you with a weapon always on hand, especially if taken by surprise. Using a Battle Axe allows for the possible free action bar slot as you only need one slot in comparison to two slots (sword/bow and the axe). The benefits of using the current tools is that they are equally as effective as the counterpart Battle Axe, however original tools are cheaper if you look at the Material to Durability ratio (Axe and Sword consists of 5 precious materials to craft, say iron bars. from these you get two tools with 100% durability, On the other hand if you choose to use your 5 bars to produce a single Battle Axe, you get one tool, with 100% durability... this effectively means that a Battle Axe uses twice the amount of material as conventional tools to do the same jobs. You decide to be efficient with your recourses or not. This creates a time based strategy, producing Battle Axes to early can slow your progression as it is expensive to use, wait too long to produce Battle Axes and you risk opponents gaining an edge over you (multiplayer pvp is most affected by this situation).
Lastly, yes i agree that throwing knives and throwing hatchets are two different items with their respectful different applications, I simply meant that either could be crafted by my suggested plan, however it suits the Hatchet more. I simply could not think of a viable way to make a throwing knife in a balanced way as they are completely one material (most often). Also i feel that hurling an axe is more in the 'style' of minecraft which I imagine as a varied medieval world with a little fantasy mixed in. A throwing knife seems a little to modern, however if the majority want a throwing knife, they shall receive (id hope). Thank you for giving me the opportunity to clarify what i meant in that section.
Please do not let this thread die by glancing over it without realising the game changing aspects it provides!
Also a reminder to post links to similar idea schemes, as I do not want to steal or take credit from others who create appropriate and viable content, thankyou !
Ive finaly read through the Rangecraft, and as i was realy impressed by some of the ideas there, i however feel some of those items can be overpowered or to convienient.
The following list will consist of ideas from Rangecraft, which is my interpretation of which should be included or excluded to concerve balance and will be categoried as such. Notes have been made as some are only viable with conditions.
Supported for Inclusion:
Alternate Snowball effects
Eggs effects
Sling
+stone bullet
+snowball (as ammo)
+slimeball (as ammo)
Alternate craftable bows with durability
+glass arrows
+torch arrows (had to think about this one, almost to convienient)
+sticky arrows
Ignigter Bow (as a moveable way to fire flaming arrows instead of having to continually place a torch down as you run)
+neth arrows (pitch is much more realistic, however the use of netherrack makes it hard to get early on in a game, but unfortunatly becomes to easy to create after making a portal to the nether.. they will be spammed, so i vote for them on one condition: their fire cannot spread)
Crossbow Designs look nice, viable alternate for crafting
Crossbow rope quarrel (simply brilliant, however the crossbow should be capable of firing basic arrows aswell, keep the quarrel for this nifty use of a crossbow)
Voted for Exclusion:
grenades (face it, this will get more annoying then creepers)
Flint (as ammo for the sling, and flint should not be craftable)
obsidian arrows ( sounds cool, but impractical)
redstone arrows (to effective in certain situations, ie disarming traps)
glowstone arrows (another cool sounding addition but save it for a mod only)
spread shot
ghast arrows (people will curse the name of these if anyone is capable of making more then one, again save for the mods)
Undecided: Boomerang, sounds like a useful little item, perhaps too useful, i cannot decide.
I am in no way stealing or copying these ideas, for more inforation on the individual items, refer to the link posted at the begining.
Feel free to discuss with me on here why or why not some of these rangecraft items should be supported, this is why ive posted this here. (progression of weapons benifits everyone!)
Also, should i post the final list on the official Rangecraft thread?

For referance, this is the thread i read: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=88513
