I often wonder just what kind of biome I'm actually in. So I figure you make yourself a thermometer that has a simple display.
Just like a normal thermometer, it has a liquid that goes up and down, the bottom would be for the more frozen biomes, the higher one for the rain foresty and savannah biomes.
I think redstone would work fine as an alternative for mercury.
Anyways, this idea is OK, but I see no real need to add it since it is pretty easy to determine what some biomes are, but others are not. There should be some more biome specific things that generate before this is considered.
An interesting idea, but the real problem is that biomes aren't diverse and/or recognizable enough. I would rather see that change first (e.g. by better differentiation in vegetation, biome dependent mobs and dungeons, etc..).

Support the Allocator! Find my inventions such as my pressure plate removal detector on the About Me page of my profile.
I'm still looking for more feedback on my configurable Redstone Gate mod. All gates and common circuits (such as e.g. clocks, edge detectors, latches and Flip-Flops) in a single block.
I like it. You could use it to help locate that magical land where the grass top matches the side, or to help find the area which contains the resources you want after biomes start to diversify more.
I think this idea would mesh very well with the idea of "Freezing in Minecraft", or rather, the need for warmer clothing in colder biomes. I'd link the topic but I don't feel like Google searching it right now.
My problem was in exploring I was able to identify like... Desert, Forest, Savannah and plains, and Taiga, other then that I found it difficult to tell what I was in.
So far Lapis only has a use in dying and placing lapis blocks. And Gold only has a use in a time piece.
I figured, give lapis and gold slightly more use. And also, lets be fair, unlike the compass, the time piece and proposed thermometer are luxury items. It's more essential to be able to navigate VIA the compass then it is to say, know it's mid-day in the rain forest (you can tell by the sun and environment).
Redstone is electrical, and so I wouldn't see it really being a heat indicator. Why not give Lapis a bit of a mystical quality in that it seems to identify heat and weather conditions. In addition, it would be nifty to have a different colored tool, the compass already has a red arrow, the thermometer would just be a blue/green liquid.
I agree with this idea !
could be kinda cool for a luxury item. and I think it should be lapis lazuli and gold (the same recipe as the op proposed first), adds a mystery touch to the lapis and keeps the luxury of gold :tongue.gif:

What say you?
I don't see it being such an important thing that you need gold for it.
Shroom = Redstone.

Would be better in my opinion.
You shouldn't need gold... unless you really wanted to give gold a purpose other than the buterry arena of death I reside in.
it would help if we had murcury though.
