Whilst reading the suggestions, I came upon this topic. I don't mean to step on anyone's feet, but I just think it should be done a bit differently, and I know most people just read the OPs, not the comments.
I had this idea a really long time ago, but I've been too lazy to make a post about it.
I love the idea, but personally, I don't want to have to make different types of blocks to go up, to the side, and down. I think you should be able to make a Redstone Block out of any type of solid Material (meaning no sand, or gravel) by putting that type of block in the crafting grid with a piece of Redstone.
= Redstone.

and so on. Doing this would give you the same type of block that you used as the base, filled with Redstone. When you place it, you would see the block on the ground, with Redstone Wire coming out of each side. When you place another Redstone Wire Block, switch, button, pressure plate, etc., beside it, the Redstone Wires from each side will disappear, and connect with the one beside it. If a Redstone Wire would be placed beside it, the wire would run up the side of the block, and go in the center of it.
Maybe right clicking on a Redstone Block would cause it to glow for a second or something, so you can find which ones you've hidden.
Doing this would make wiring houses so much easier, if not a bit neater.
except you would have to double the number of blocks in the game. which is icky. i do like the idea, but may i propose a different way to do it? place down an ordinary block like normal, and while holding shift, right click the block with redstone, and the block becomes a redstone infused block which works exactly as you described. and when breaking the block you simply get the block and a piece of redstone back separately. placing redstone without holding shift would be the same as normal, going on top of the block. anyway, this would allow your idea but minimizing craziness.
