Weapons in Minecraft have a certain, shall I say boring, fashion. They are both simple and, for many, make no sense. Say you have the diamond or iron sword, they would take days to make in real life, though most are fine with that, why do you not have knives. A knife is a smaller, compacter tool that would be used everyday in a survival situation, from carving to weapon making, building to hunting. A knife, or at least a dagger would be and excellent resource to add to the game. I have many other weapons, aswell as things like races, (Dwarves, Elves, Sirens, etc) blocks, tweaks and mobs. Though I have all these suggestions, the knife would be my primary tool in any danger. I hope Mojang is reading, because I would really love this feature, thankyou.
Due to feedback from others on the forum, I would like to update this post so it would make more sense. Erictom333 and TripleA9 have stated that every item/tool has a purpose other don't. One thing I came up with is the fact that a killing a cow drops leather, to some it makes no sense. The gain leather, a body would have to be skinned, and skinning with something like a sword or axe would both be wasteful and un-immersive. A knife/dagger could be used to skin an animal, though skinning an animal would introduce yet another item, the mob corpse. A corpse explains itself, it sits there for a while and slowly despawns. As for how to craft, it would make sense that the recipe would be 1 iron above 1 stick due to the fact that a sword is a line of and ore above 1 stick. The other functions that this item could possess is something like being an easily craftable ranged weapon. To use a bow and arrow, first you need the string, which requires killing spiders, then you need to farm all the materials needed for arrows, which takes a long time, just to result in never using them again. Finally for the post update, I have been asked about damage, my thought of the damage would be one and a half hearts, and critical hits would be two and a half. While knife, or dagger, whichever one prefers, is good idea. Which I 100% support, even though we just got the Trident in 1.13, and 1.14 introduced the Crossbow. But the game still kinda would maybe need smaller weapon, than sword is, and knife or dagger would be perfect fit to the game (unlike *cough*firearms*cough*).
Also, unfortunatelly this forum is not ran by Mojang, nor is it affiliated with Mojang. Your best bet would be posting this suggestion to official Minecarft suggestions subreddit, as no one from Mojang probably even reads this forum.
With Erictom333 on this one. It would be neat to have a dagger/knife, but what would it do that other items could not? Currently every new weapon is also a tool that allows the player to do something unique. For instance, an axe allows you to chop wood items faster and left clicking a log also strips the log of bark. A pickaxe allows you to mine faster, a shovel allows you to dig faster, so on and so forth. I could give this support if you could come up with unique gameplay mechanics for these things.
