Cages would be used in a way to transport mobs to a desired location, even if it's just to set the mob on fire or drown them. A cage would be built with either Iron or wood. A Wooden Cage would only be able to house Sheep, Cows, Chickens, and Pigs while an Iron Cage would be able to house said NPCs as well as Creepers, Spiders, Skeletons, and Zombies.
The idea of a cage would to make farming mobs easier as the cage would follow behind the player but only on flat surfaces. To get the mob out of the cage, all you need do is break the cage.
