Dogs are awesome. But I think they could be epic! Cats have had a personality overhaul, do I reckon dogs could do with one perhaps too?
Or maybe they have and it's because I'm coming back to minecraft after so long that I haven't seen it. But still. I think these ideas are cool.
Behavior
- Dogs will now find a spot to lay down and take a nap if you happen to be in the same area for a while e.g running back and fourth between chests and crafting tables
- Dogs will now eventually lay down after telling them to sit if they've been sitting for a while
- How many times have you accidentally locked your dog outside? Well now they'll let you know about it. If you're inside and your dog is outside (not sitting) and there is no other way to reach you. Other then through that closed door. Dogs will now jump up onto the door and whine and scratch at it until you let them in.
- If you have more then one dog and are freely moving nearby a grassy area with no threats, they will chase each other on the grass from time to time. Like they're playing.
(I think these behavior updates will add a little more lovable personality to tamed dogs.)
New commands
- Play fetch! If you have a stick, you can now hold right click to charge and release right click to throw. If your dog isn't sitting they will run to the stick, pick it up and bring it back to you
- Additionally you can tell your dog to attack, by throwing the stick at a mob. If the stick hits a mob when you throw it your dog will attack and kill the mob before bringing the stick back to you. Handy for clearing that spider in the distance that you don't want to have to walk all the way over to deal with.
- Sometimes you want your dog to move somewhere but they just aren't getting the message. Now you can shift right click the ground with nothing in your hand and your dog will immediately come right to the block you clicked. If they were sitting when you clicked they will sit down again as soon as they've reached the block. (Handy for if you want them to stop attacking something or someone. Also handy for if you happen to have lost him, even if he's sitting he will teleport to you if he's too far away to walk)
(I personally can say there have been a few times I wished I could tell my dog to do something that it couldn't I reckon this'll make them even more helpful.)
New objects
- New item. Dog bed. Crafted with just two wool.
- Only takes up one block of space on the ground (looks a little larger so the dog can fit.)
- If you walk into the room or near the area the dog bed is, your dog will walk to it and lay on it. Keeping them out from under your feet while you're working
- If you right click them whilst they're on the bed (the same way you make them sit) they will lower their head and will stay there like sitting until you right click them again to let them get up when they like
- When you get into your bed and sleep, your dog will also go to theirs to sleep if their beds in the same room.
- Dogs heal overtime whenever they are on their bed. Or instantly to full if they are on their bed when you sleep through a night.
(Of course meat will still heal them but I think it would be nice if they had a way to heal themselves, and plus the aesthetic of a nice dog bed.)
There is nothing to whcih I have a strong objection in the proposal, but it seems better suited [like foxes, parrots, polar bears, and a large part of the recent villager schedule/raid stuff] to MineCraft RPG: The Spin-off than vanilla.
The difference seems to me to be one of focus: the named additions and this suggestion support something more similar to the SecondLife approach where one creates a place for an electronic avatar to live vs the world forming / building focus of MC.
[Writing this sort of thing into a mod devoted toward a playstlye based on running a farm (or similar) might well find a favorable reception.]
Another way of expressing that is that MC has little to no furniture (not built by players in game) because built-by-the-player is seen as more important than looks-pretty. Where the 'looks-pretty' is cheap (eg parrot colors, spinning tropical fish appearance) it may get added, but the some of the proposed changes to dogs would require reworking (and considerably upgrading) the AI which would be expected to entail significant costs both up-front and ongoing….

I wouldn't have thought it would require much tweaking considering that cats and villagers already have been given significantly increased AI. Finding objects to interact with and interacting with them as such. I just thought since cats got a tweak that dogs should too.

I don’t think giving the game “second life” mechanics is a bad thing.
A large appeal to Minecraft is how many people it appeals towards. People could focus on the survival aspect- playing hard or hardcore. People could focus on the creative aspect- playing creative or survival with a more buid focus (that’s me). People could focus on logic and redstone. Or a huge amount can focus on multiplayer servers.
So to open up the door to other play styles is not a bad thing, unless it starts harming the already established system. Which this does not. Furniture messes with the creative “simple” aspect, and would have no use. But dog beds have a clear use, and to my knowledge, there’s no way to use the already implemented items to create such a tool.
I for one wouldn’t mind playing with my tamed dog after building it a nice creative play area.

Support.
YMMV, and yes the dog bed taken alone would probably be useful enough to justify the cost of the addition.
There remains the technical hurdle that the asked for enhancemnets to mob AI would (with near certainty) increase compuitational overload.
(This is likely to qualify as "harming the already established system".)
This would only be exacerbated as MS/Mj moved further down this road by extending this to other mobs and individualizing the behavior of specific instances of each. [Horses, cows, and parrots have individual personalities and can be treated as pets/companion animals by people. This seems to be less common with sheep and pigs, but does occur. The sam ewould alos likely be true of other species, at least bisrd & mammals.]
There is also the more basic argument (also applicable to many of the recent RPG elements being added) that attempting to be all things to all pepole (most typically) results in a product useless to any qv an extreme example. [Put another way, WoW will provide a better WoW experience for those who want that than MS/Mj will be able to write into MC… even a complete start-from-scratch rewrite would have no better chance of out-WoWing WoW than any of the previous attempts to implement that style MMORPG ]
[I am pleased to see you expressing the opinion "to open up the door to other play styles is not a bad thing, unless it starts harming the already established system" and hope you its extension to the various forms of auto-farming/fishing…]

If implementing that kind of AI would cause strains and hitches then yeah don't add it. But as I have mentioned before, villagers and cats seem to already have that same kind of AI. So I didn't think it would be too hard to implement it for dogs. But I'm not a coder so I wouldn't know really.
But I say fish is right. I wouldn't think it would hurt any already known systems. No one who already owns or enjoys dogs would really be harmed by it. Because they don't have to make a bed or use the stick. And you don't have to own a dog at all if you don't want. Just thought it'd be a cool idea.
Ha yea, imagine if dogs could sniff out ores. Like if you hold a diamond up to it, it will detect that ore if its in a 25 block radius. When it detects it the dog will run toward it and start barking once it gets as close as it can get to the ore. Youll have to hold the diamond up to the dog again to get it to search for the diamond ore again
Police dogs disarm and lock criminals down so I think that would be cool foir the dog in minecraft too. Like being able to sick the dog on an enemy, the enemy could have a high chance of dropping whatever they're holding and a chance of bebeing locked in place by the dog holding them still
Guard dogs would also be epic! Like it's hard trying to set up traps so that people won't get into your stuff but i think it would be cool to have a dog there that will bark when it detects a nearby player, and will attack if the player gets any closer. I kind of always felt like dogs should have this ability
And I find it to be very annoying finding hurried treasure, it would be nice if the dog could help with that.

Please take no offe ee to this, but I find these additions overall unnecessary.
1 and 2. Dog beds seem a little modern for Minecraft. I feel a block of carpet would accomplish the same goal. It also seems, again I use this word, unnecessary. Dogs in Minecraft have never needed to sleep, and neither has any mob in Minecraft, excluding villagers. I feel if they were this high maintenance in a videogame, I'd rather not even own a dog.
3. I have never had a problem with dogs being in my way while I "work", and besides, you can just push them out the way anyways.
4. Making dogs sit works exactly how you are describing if they were on a dog bed. I'm confused as to what the new feature is here.
5. Again, dogs do not need to sleep in Minecraft so I still find this unecessary.
6. Now we're talking. That seems like a neat feature. I do get sick of using my precious steak on my dog.

People seem to be so against this. Yet no one cared when they added 'unnecessary features' to the cats. Besides. It's a game, not a job. Things don't have to be necessary. They only have to be fun, that's the point of a game isn't it?

In response to Ghost00, that seems OP.

Then feed them rotten flesh. Dogs don't care what they eat, so long as it's meat.
My suggestions: Enhancements - Throwable Fire Charges - On Phantoms and Elytra. Also check out The Minecraftian Language. This signature is not here to waste your space.
I feel like dogs deserve different breeds more than anything else first.
