Maybe a mining helmet shouldn't offer any protection. That way, you would have to make the choice between armour and light. If it offered no armour (like a pumpkin), it wouldn't break like armour does after you take damage. At least I think pumpkins don't break when you take damage... On a topic unrelated to durability and armour, it would be incredibly handy underwater.

Or swap out the for Glowstone, for a bigger light radius, a sort of upgrade.
Ideally, the torch one could go out (when it is implemented that they do) but not the Glowstone one.
Also, both should have the option to activate them. right-click when holding them to turn the torch/Glowstone light on, then equip it. Then after some time passes, say 2 minutes for a torch, 10 for Glowstone, it breaks.
Could be repaired with whatever was used to make it, like so;

Where the sponge is the mining hat itself. Again, switch the Torch for a Glowstone block depending on which one you need repaired.
Been suggested thousands of times before.
My rebuttal:
If you have portable light, and don't bother with torches, mobs will still spawn in the cave behind you, and you will be screwed on the way out.

Makes it a challenge... plus, eventually, those torches will be coded to go out after a while. Not too useful anymore if they burn out, caves can't constantly stay lit.
Well, 10 minutes is rather short, but think about it, isn't it the length of a whole night? or is it 20 minutes? either way, torches are easier to get.
Permanent is an idea I had, but, wouldn't it break the game a bit? I know that it is hard to gather glowstone and survive, but, still...
I'm fairly certain that torches will be remade into lanterns for use in lampposts.

And, so what if it's useless? Several tools and other things are fairly useless, depending on your playstyle. You don't ever need to make a hoe if you don't make a wheat farm, and thus, all further wheat products become useless.
If you think like that, then the whole game is pointless.

Sandstone? Any point for that, other than holding sand above your head when you dig in beaches/deserts?
Spiders can't climb on it. Great defenses.

I like your take on this. A mining helmet would be a really useful piece of equipment to have in caverns opposed to using us thousands of torches like I have navigating. However, I think that the mining helmet should only light up infront of the player, to keep that feeling of terror in walking in the dark.

Then don't use them. This is more of a personal reason and it actually reinforces making mining hats. Some people will use it and others don't.
It is a downside then and a reasonable one at that.
Also if we can use this underwater... IT WOULD BE AWESOMETASTIC.
if Torch Hats and Glowstone Hats can be made, as I suggested, then only the Glowstone ones could go underwater, as the torch would immediately go out, if not break the hat itself.

The problem is that it fails to take into account how light actually works in minecraft, something which--for the record--has been discussed in the numerous other threads on the subject.

you think so? go build yourself a sandstone wall and wait out the night then.
