Ah. The good old "gamerule to turn off something I don't want" suggestion. Gamerules only exist for mapmaking purposes, not for disabling features that people don't like (even doInsomnia). If you don't want pillagers, set a repeating, always-on command block to /kill @e[type=pillager]..

Consider also that there are players, like myself, who won't even dream of touching newer versions because of various changes (I'll have been playing the SAME version for SIX years in a few months, and it is basically the only version I've ever played. While I don't actually even care about any other new features many people have likely gotten bored and stopped playing, and at the least this splits the community up even more).

Mojangcrasoft doesn't expect you to use gamerules in Survival mode (without cheats). This is why gamerules are considered cheating. IMHO they should never have added phantoms.
Bedrock (the most popular version by far) actually has such a gamerule:

Again, Mojangcrasoft expacts you to play in the current version.

So? They can't force me to, even if they removed the ability to play older versions I'd just use MCP, which allows you to play singleplayer with no limitations (e.g. demo) without logging in (presumably, Mojang allows them to do this because you have to use the launcher to download the game files, but once it copies them over you don't need them. You can even play versions before 1.3 in the launcher without any demo mode limitations, other than multiplayer, which I've never played, which is probably not patched by Mojang because they are so old they may as well be a limited demo; even 1.6.4 requires using a resource pack in order to use a custom skin since the old skin server it used no longer works, and for a while it didn't even recognize the session ID given to it by the launcher, so as far as the game was concerned I was playing without an account but this has no effect on singleplayer).
A significant number of servers are also still on older versions, if not always because of disliking new updates (mods are the main reason why versions like 1.7.10 are still popular, and this is part of the reason why I've never updated; I see my own mods as my own version of the game, including my own ideas of how Mojang could have implemented new features, similar to Better Than Wolves, which is still on 1.5.2; "Better Than Wolves is a vision of what Mincraft could have been". In fact, I've even considered adding a gamerule to disable my own attack cooldown (different from 1.9's in that you can attack multiple mobs as fast as you can as long as you accurately hit them and the penalty is accumulative).
Mods like Better than Wolves have been spiritually succeeded into newer versions of the game. I think we just had a mod update to 1.12 that last was seen in 1.6.something, and there are still a few 1.7.10 mods that are finally updating.
In an almost Monty Python sort of way, some of the mods you think have died aren't really all that dead yet. Go nolstagia (rah rah RAH!), I guess?
Personally, I hate nostlagia. It's just an excuse for not progressing to newer versions.
As I've said before, I couldn't care less about newer versions; here are some of the statistics from my current world, which is a "caving only" world (I did not do any of the normal "survival" progression, just went straight to caving after giving myself the items I use, and otherwise my early gameplay is basically just to get those items and afterwards I play exactly the same way):
This is my sole "build", nothing more than a basic storage area, farm plot for food, and a couple trees to get wood for torches:
I measure my progress in a world with maps like these and caving-related stats like the number of torches I've used or ores mined:
Consider that all of my modded worlds have significantly more caves than vanilla 1.6.4 while 1.7+ nerfed them (more than suggested here, by reducing the average/maximum size and size variation of cave systems by 3-fold; mineshafts and dungeons are also less than half as common), and as mentioned before, I'm of the extremely strong opinion that modded versions are separate versions of the game - and indeed, a way to make my very own game, which I have full say over how it is updated - so why even update?
(this one also includes mineshafts, counting all mineshaft-related blocks, not just air)
Dear Mojang,
Give us a game rule to turn off pillagers.
Thank you!

My suggestions: Enhancements - Throwable Fire Charges - On Phantoms and Elytra. Also check out The Minecraftian Language. This signature is not here to waste your space.
Thanks for the command block advice, but my recommendation/request is more practical.
Have a nice day.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
