As many of you know, when creating new worlds you have the following options
Superflat (Custom layers)
I like to suggest another world generation option.. Islands
It may be difficult to explain but what this option does is create nothing but islands of different Biomes & that you need to travel by water to get to each island to get your required resources
I know you can get 'Island seeds' that get you starting on an island & you may be lucky to have some islands around you of different biomes.. but as you go further afield then you end up with large landmassesprobably surround your small set of islands
(Pictures attached are a sample island seed & how it looks close up & as you get further away)
I know you can custom create nothing but islands using world editors like 'painter' - but what happens when you got past the custom map borders & regen new chunks ?? - you could end up with large land masses
I would suggest that the options you have for this world generation would be something like Flatworld or Buffet
- where you can choose the types of blocks to appear in your world - but also have the sort of options like 'minimum island size' / 'max island size' (So you could have a lot of small islands or larger islands) , 'distance between islands' (make player travel a long or short way to get to next group of islands) & 'with/without water' (this way you can create a skyblock world of floating islands)
And being part of MC coding - if you happen to travel a large distance away (beyond the natural intital world generation) - then new islands are generated in the new chunks
I also think this may be useful for multiplayer servers that host 'skyblock' style gameplay - they just create a no-water island world with large distances between islands
I like the idea of a world of only "small" islands, but would prefer to reach this goal by specifying a large 'hydrographic percentage' in a custom world generator. [Percentage of the world that is ocean for non-Traveller fans.]
This would allow player a wider range of options than a single MS/Mj chosen percentage; allowing the generation of 'desert' worlds via the same mechanic. (Although a similar specification for frequency of rivers would also be welcome....)
As you've noted allowing the player to control the range of island size and the typical distance between islands would be useful.
Ideally, one could specify the mean and maximum island size as well as the distribution curve. [Adding the ability to parse mathmatical funtions might be beyond the interest of most players (although likely to be appreciated by mapmakers), but a GUI based on an audio graphic equalizer ought to be readily comprehensible even to the bottom age bracket.]
This would allow one to create the possibility of the occasional Ireland sized island should such be desired win a world of otherwise bow-shot sized islands.
Similar controls could specify the inter-island distance.
SkyBlock appears to be IP, but an option for 'Floating Islands' should be a generic enough way to specify removing the ocean (and underlying land/bedrock).
