Let's be honest, since the introduction of nether fortresses nothing has really changed in this part of minecraft.
Okay you can get blaze rods and wither heads, but that's not really rewarding, beside, the nether is supposed to be
a scary place, but most people aren't even a tad scared of going there. With no real and important purpose and no challenge, i feel like the nether is obsolete.
A rework is needed, More enemies like Ghast queens or baby ghasts would be cool and could expand a great enemy concept, some small structures like nether altars or pits, or just a bit more variety in the boring red landscape. To make the place a bit more scarier why not making it fully dark and you need to use the fires and lava pits or a night vision potion to see.
That's my opinion, you can be happy with the current state of the nether, but i think this place could be better.
I would love to see the Nether revamped, especially with enchanted diamond armor being fairly common on servers now nothing there actually poses much of a threat other than falling in lava.
Sounds like a good idea to be honest. I mean most people only enter the Nether to find blaze rods and netherwarts (or any other potion ingredient) and just leave... I mean it is pretty bland and you only go there when you absolutely must.
It certainly needs a revamp like the other biomes.

The nether is the source for not only brewing stands, but practically every brewing ingredient that exists. It includes quartz, a decorative block. Pigmen and ghasts are good sources of gold and gunpowder. Nether bricks are also decorative. Nether wart can only grow on soul sand, which only spawns naturally in the Nether. And soul sand is useful for building traps. The nether is nowhere close to obsolete.

Remember those versions that minecraft pranked us with? Specifically:
Minecraft 2.0
Minecraft 1.VR-Pre1
Snapshot 15w14a
Minecraft 3D
Those are still downloadable! Watch this video for 2.0:
To download the other ones you need to make a folder in the versions folder for minecraft and put the client and JSON file for the versions in there. They all need to be named the same aside from file extensions. Once you do that, you will be able to choose that version when making a new profile with the minecraft launcher.

An unassailable argument
Concrete proposals for achieving this are, however, needed…
fishg had a fairly recent suggestion about what are effectively baby ghasts that you might find interesting http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/minecraft-java-edition/suggestions/2944150-ghastlings-the-baby-ghasts
What is meant by your other mentioned additions (ghast queens, nether alters, and nether pits) is unknown as no details were provided.
There have been various small (and not so small) new structure proposals (eg. https://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/minecraft-java-edition/suggestions/2881712-magma-cube-tree-a-novel-nether-structure) which may also be of interest.
[A number of these to which I kept links appear to have been lost to The Great Purge.]
I got 15 hits from a single search for 'nether' in Java Suggestions just since 01Mar18, so a considerable number (of varying quality) remain.
