Chain Mail Armor is a lower tier of Iron Armor. It's basically equivalent to stone tools for which it helps you, but not a lot. I think Chain Mail Armor should be crafted by using iron nuggets. Iron nuggets aren't very useful. Nine of them can be used to create an iron ingot but that's pretty much it. Having the ability to craft Chain Mail Armor with Iron Nuggets would give the low tier uncraftable armor and iron nuggets a purpose.
Chain Mail Armor is so rare, yet, so useless. Crafting Chain Mail armor using iron nuggets would make it much more common and it would actually be a reasonable item to have.
A full set of Chain Mail armor would only be worth almost three iron ingots. It'd be a cheap starter armor, but not an end game armor. Usually, when I find chain mail armor dropped by a mob, I already have Protection 1 Iron Armor and Chain Mail is practically useless. Making it be such a cheap armor wouldn't be a stretch, but instead, a reasonable starter armor.
Strangely enough I had the same thought just yesterday... and even stranger I also had pretty much the same recipe in mind. So support I guess?
I don't see why this should be a problem to implement (maybe there will be one or two people who disagree with the recipe, thinking it is to cheap to aquire) as chain mail is supposed to be the intermediate armour between gold and iron... but it is so rare that it is almost useless at that. Chances are that most players who start off with cows near them go for leather and then straight to iron... and in some cases just skip all armours straight to iron. Most people don't even bother with gold since it takes iron tier tools to collect and not all of us start out in a mesa biom. So the only reason people use gold at all is because of its enchantabillity (makes sense) or because it had been dropped by enemies.
Yep. The idea of having something to bridge the gap between (effectively) leather and iron (whilst resources are still scarce... well to be fair it only takes a few minutes to aquire enough iron for a full set... but then again... some people like tools as well). All in all I think this is worth considering craftable chain mail.^^
