Creative mode is fun and all but the toolbar is just too small to hold all the blocks i wanna build with.
Ways to solve this problem could be more slots or to make it possible to have multiple items/blocks in one slot.
This is how i imagine it working:
-Switching through these items/blocks could be done by holding down a special key while using the scrolling wheel.
-Item groups could be predefined -like stonebricks, stonebrickstairs, stonebricksslaps etc.- or userdefined via a special tab in the creative inventory.
Erm... you do know that this already exists & you can switch between 9 custom toolbars (each containing up to 9 items each) by a 2-button keypress ??
One way to do this is
1) set up your toolbar with the items you want to group together
- For eg 'stone' which contains Stone / Stonebrick / StonebrickSlabs / StoneBrickStairs / Cobble
- Then press 'C' [This is Default] and a number (let's say 'C' & '1')
2) Clear your toolbar & set it up for the next set (you may want a 'redstone' setup) - then press 'C' and another different number [example 'C' and '2']
3) Repeat for each custom toolbar you want (up to 9)
To recall the toolbar needed
> press 'X' & the relevant number - the custom toolbar will appear (NOTE what ever you had in your toolbar originally will disappear)
You can see what custom toolbar you've set up in the creative menu by clicking on the 'bookshelf' tab
(Note The Default key for Saving is 'C' and recalling is 'X' but you may've changed these in the Control menu to something else)
Another workaround is to lay out examplars of the blocks you will be using when you start a build (using items in frames for things that are not blocks).
This array can then be used with the pick-block feature to avoid having to hunt through the creative inventory.
If the build is sufficiently large or complex you may want more than one.
If you tend to reuse a particular selection (eg. redstone resources) often, recording it in a structure block can speen the process of layout.
Given the existing options that can approximate what is requested in the OP, (and numerous things I would consider higher priorities): no support.

WARNING: I have an extemely "grindy" playstyle; YMMV — if this doesn't seem fun to you, mine what you can from it & bin the rest.
Mission accomplished I guess? Don't worry! There is a lot of stuff in MC that most people forget is there (or never new about). It took me years to
figure out that there are more options to the f3 key to toggle chunk border visabillity or even item Id's. Just take it with stride and see it as a victory...
there aren't that many people who can say their idea got implemented into the game, even before they made the suggestion themselves!

At least you'll get a laugh out of it. Oh and -Post release support.- XD
Yeah i know about this feature but its still not practical enough for me.
Dont get me wrong i like the custom toolbar feature, but more blocks for one slot would make it easier because it eliminates the need to switch between toolbars.
