So the 1.14 update is coming and villagers and villages are getting an overhaul, could maybe the villagers get an overhaul in their AI too so that they can be able to open iron doors with a button? Why or why not? helps.
As is (and without a pulse extender) villagers getting through the door while it is open probably requires more AI than can be afforded at present.
Pathfinding that allowed the use of ladders might be considerably easier (but would still represent a major change of course from only players being allowed these forms of interaction). [Starting with a greatly reduced tendency to wander into lava/off cliffs, or congregate until entity cramming 'thins the herd' seem both more doable and less disruptive.]

WARNING: I have an extemely "grindy" playstyle; YMMV — if this doesn't seem fun to you, mine what you can from it & bin the rest.
I strongly prefer not, because I just set up that system to keep villagers out of my house in town because they kept getting stuck on my chests and in my cauldrons.
I'd say no in general, unless they were given their own specific button to look for. That way players can still keep them out of buildings if they want to.

Also only buttons work, no lever etc.

Also. This would probably require some AI revamp just to get them to associate a specific button with a door.
Granted one could make it so, that the villager would recognize a button right next to an iron door and it would
give all sorts of possibilites triggering your own redstone contraptions via villagers opening doors. But as
already mentioned the villagers are too dumb at the moment.
It all breaks down to Mojang wanting to rewrite the villager AI or not.
