Will this work/Is it good? - Single Choice
The idea is simple, right click a redstone block with a compass, and the compass with point to it form then on. The coordinates of the block will be shown as the name of the compass. This is just an in-game way of directions.
This sounds like a useful utillity... though does it have to be a redstone block per se? Don't get me wrong...
I'm asking this not because getting redstone is hard (it is not... you get tons of that stuff in a matter of
minutes), but rather because your compass idea could essentially be integrated into an already existing
idea and still function the way you intended it to. This feature being banners that we can already use as
waypoints on our maps...so instead of right klicking a placed banner with a map in your hand you could
instead hold the compass and tune it instead (or as well as the map having the needle point toward
the banner and a map that shows the waypoint... so two tools complementing each other in a way).
As an added extra you could also make it so that similar to the waypoints on the map the needle on
your compass changes colour according to the base colour used with said banner. This way you could
for example have a compass pointing to the world spawn (red needle) and another compass
pointing to your base with with a blue needle (being marked with a blue banner). Sure you could still
use restone blocks to do the same (and they can be removed just as easily)... but I thought that
navigational tools should fit together one way or the other using pretty much the same designator
block...at least to some degree.
To reset the compass to its normal world spawn detection mode all you would need to do is pick
up the banner, or as you probably already have planned originally by removing the redstone block.
As some people have suggested before... beds might also be another option to mark a position
as a new spawn...but then again. I like your approach more since that idea would make a compass
more of a general navigational tool to mark all kind of points of interest instead of just spawns.
-Support... I like the idea.^^-
Oh by the way...I also like the idea of showing the coords as a tooltip while having the compass selected in ones
inventory slot. That is if I understood your explanation correctly.
