Anyone who has done some mining knows that you quickly end up with far too much cobblestone to do anything with.
What I am suggesting is a way to do something with all of that cobblestone, and get some benefit out of it.
When you craft four sand together, you get a single block of sandstone. Sandstone does not fall, and takes longer to mine and is more explosion resistant that sand. I am suggesting something similar for cobblestone. If you craft four cobblestone in a 2x2 square, you get one block of "compacted stone".
Compacted stone is much more explosion resistant, and takes a few seconds longer to dig. This makes it a less common, but a much better building material. Compacted stone, in my opinion, should have a granite-like texture.
The minimum explosion resistance to survive a single block of TNT is 77. A block of compacted stone should be able to survive a single block of TNT right next to it. This means that its explosion resistance should be about 80-90, if I am correct. This would cause compacted stone to be immune to a single block of TNT, but be destroyed if there are 2 or more blocks of TNT.

Also, I am just going to do this: Check out my ornithopter suggestion. The link is in my signature. :biggrin.gif:
Compact stone seems like a redundant idea. It's stone, after all. So why don't you try thinking of something else that's stone-like, that can be made from stone? First idea that comes to MY mind is, of course, concrete, or even Cinder (as in Cinder blocks)

So how about that, eh?
Concrete and compacted stone should be different things.
