I read a lot about coal becoming worthless/useless, so why not make it more useful?
The generator (for ease of typing) runs on one fuel only - coal (and oil if it is added).
The while being actively powered by its fuel will send a current down a red-stone circuit (because of amount of the power being generated, a causes the circuits range to be doubled (that is how far the charge goes before a diode or inverter is needed)) could possibly be longer if needed (jayjay960).
Inside the interface is a three boxes for the fuel, a bolt of electricity (that depletes itself much like the flame in a furnace) to represent how much longer the fuel currently being use will last and a lever like button which will swap the between alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC). Direct current is a single non-stop charge down the circuit until fuel is removed or depleted. Alternating current switches between off and on every second.

Futher ideas:
Adding a lever to the top of the allows it to be toggled 'off' and 'on' so you only waste fuel when you need to. Sending a charge TO the will automatically turn it on.
Cool idea this could add some time into the game such as you have 5 minutes to get out of tomb before the iron door closes put a generator with 5 minutes worth of wood into it and let the paniking commence
Was just thinking about the potential traps this could make haha.
