I can't tell you how much fun I'm having with the minecart boosters.
For some reason they just shut off in one of my worlds and truthfully the fun is gone for that particular file for me now.
I had a pretty intricate system of switches and stations that eventually was going to span a large chunk of the map and without the boosters I'm not able to cover that ground... let alone have the "OMG WE'RE FLYING FULL SPEED INTO A LAVA WATERFALL" section :-)
So please make the minecart boosters permanent. It's a blast to play with them and they add a great deal to the game for those of us obsessed with scenic tours of our lands.
I say take them away, and have a real use for Powered Mine-carts (that is why they are here), since the MineCraft Mine-Cart Boosters makes the Item redundant, and that isn't fun
Also because I support realism (to a certain extent)....So good luck finding all that coal for your new powered mine-cart system

What if we had a booster piece? For instance, it would require gold bars instead of iron, and it would require redstone. That way, we get rid of the gigantic booster system taking up people's worlds, and instead replace it with a single piece of track that gives the same effect as one square worth of boosting. I say we should get rid of powered minecarts altogether (Assuming this idea takes effect), they require way too much space to work with to actually power you up a good hill. You need a 1/3 slope for it to work!

Yeah, that's not what the OP said. If Notch can figure a way to keep the utility without the bug, that's fine.
So he has to find a way to have the effect of 2 minecarts going side by side, into some kind of piece, which again would render the Powered Minecart Useless...He might as well take out the Powered MineCart if he somehow makes the bug permanent

I would love to see them gotten rid of and replaced with a booster track/plate. The powered minecarts should get a major overhaul and the ability to link. Perhaps linked carts will not work with boosters.
So you want to make a roller coaster -> use boosters
You want to make a transcontinental railroad -> coal powered trains that can transport several players as well as several chest carts. There should be a limit to the number of carts a single engine could pull but you can add more for longer trains.

Thanks for the different opinions. I want to state that I don't particularly have an attachment to the structure of the boosters .... I like their effect.
I can't get the same impact from "here we go on a 1/3 grade powered mine car up the mountain to get to the lava waterfall and you'll be so amazed when we approach the firey flow at the speed of walking..." as I get from one vertical booster that whips them around and heads them pell mell towards the lava.
So by all means replace the boosters with anything that allows me to move a minecart around with the same speeds as the current boosters.
Just because we have the boosters doesn't mean the powered mine-carts useless or redundant. I for one like having multiple ways of doing something. The ability to link minecarts together and have the power mine carts pull them sounds good. So is making a Mk II powered minecart. I also like the booster track/plate. Granted it sould probably only send you in one way. Maybe if Notch adds magnets, we could use them to craft the booster.
