Have mobs roam around in groups, like in Survival Test.
Here's how it would work: Make it so that, at night, when there's a hostile mob, it's more likely that another of the same type will spawn within a few blocks of it. This way, running around at night will be more challenging because you're likely to run into a large group of monsters rather than just a lone one here and there that you can avoid.
I remember that, in survival test, fighting monsters was more fun because you had to be more careful, either to try to only get the attention of one at a time, or to fight multiple mobs at once.
Think of how much fun this could be in SMP, you could form a hunting party and look for a party of mobs and work together to defeat them, rather than everyone just hitting a single mob at the same time.
However, I think this could make caves too dangerous. It would be best if it happened only when the mobs are exposed to moonlight.
Mobs already spawn in groups. Ever notice when 5 creepers all run at you at the same time? Maybe they scatter for you or some'n... I think they should spawn in larger groups, though.

I do remember the feel of the mobs on that old version was different from the feel in the current game. I'd like to see some mobs in groups, others single (or rarely in groups). So perhaps zombies in groups (they're the least threatening at present), spiders in groups, skellies sometimes in groups, creepers rarely in groups.
