Different types of bookshelves would be nice, what im talking about is like dark oak bookshelves, jungle bookshelves, things like that would be nice for themed homes.
Bookshelves are among a number of blocks for which aesthetic variants based on the wood used in crafting could be added, chests being among the most prominent of the other invariant appearance blocks. [The this sort of change would be to the pleasure of aesthetic centric players and have little (or no) impact on the 'functionalists' argues in favor of such being made. ]
A minor suggestion, but one that seems easy enough and appears to have minimal downside… [It would seem to require matching planks to craft a bookshelves.]

WARNING: I have an extemely "grindy" playstyle; YMMV — if this doesn't seem fun to you, mine what you can from it & bin the rest.
It would be nice if we could have functional variants as well.
Bookshelf with hidden safe = bookshelf shapelessly crafted with a chest. Small inventory, no bigger than 9 slots and perhaps as few as 5. Either the same texture as a plain bookshelf or that plain-bookshelf texture with the very, very tiny addition of a small portion of a safe peeking through behind the books.
Bookshelf with secret door = bookshelf shapelessly crafted with a wooden door and a lever. This would specifically be a full block (ie, the bookshelf) in the closed position and would be a partial block (the door) when in the open position. In both cases the front face would always be the bookshelf texture and the back face would always be the door texture. Standard door mechanics would otherwise apply, but it would be cool if there were a small animation of tipping out a book to trigger like you see in the movies.
trapped bookshelf = bookshelf shapelessly crafted with dispenser. Would shoot you with whatever's inside when triggered. Probably would need a related suggestion to make other things concealed.
bookshelf with peekhole = bookshelf shapelessly crafted with observer. Technically speaking, it just allows the bookshelf to become a redstone signal source when stuff happens that normally triggers an observer, but this would probably look really cool if there were a tiny eye animation randomly appearing from time to time as if someone really were behind the wall spying on you.

Bookshelf variants should have different books and book arrangements.

I've been missing different kinds of bookshelves for so long... xD
How about bookshelves that actually have an inventory GUI and let you store written and in-progress books, and maps?
