Since Mojang has been adding in lots of new structures to worldgen over the last few versions of Minecraft, If there were a folder to generate structures for the spawnpoint of worlds, then players could ensure that they start in a developed area that would be unique in the world, if they so choose.
Starting in the wilderness is still a good thing, and there could be an option like the "spawnchest", that would toggle the starting city, as I often like to start new worlds completely from scratch, but as a structure designer I also like to let worldgen handle a certain amount of infrastructure that I would end up building again and again.
This is definitely the direction Mojang is heading in, especially with the village overhaul in the snapshots.
