the benefit of changing the recipe is to let people able to craft TNT if such map lacks desert or mesa something like that (or you might have to go far away just for sand), generally harder to find all the ingredients (comparing to sand so long as you found any desert after you got gunpowder), and renewable.
so currently, you will need 4 sands and 5 units of gunpowder to craft a TNT? simple. replace those sands with 3 papers and a string at the top. (i could see the strings at the top of that block, why not requiring strings instead?)
I'm down. String needs more uses anyways. The current recipe is just a leftover from when Notch literally didn't have enough items in the game to make something reasonable, so it could use a change now that the game has evolved so much.

As the original dynamite invented by Nobel was nitroglycerin and diatomaceous earth, the gunpowder and sand recipe is less counterintuitive than it may first appear....
Being generally opposed to non-renewable blocks/items, I like Badprenup's solution of making sand renewable. (This would also 'fix' the nonrenewable nature of sandstone/red sandstone. Add a way to produce gravel, and non-renewable concrete would also be solved.)
[AFAIK, the chest_carrying_mob_dropped_through_the_return_end_portal_as_it_dies duplication glitch remains, but too late game to be particularly useful. (It may also be considered overly "cheaty" :whistle: ) ]
alluorbasesaregone's 9xFirework idea would be fine with me, although using all 1-rockest would still increase the gunpowder cost of TNT to 9 per (and all 3-rockets to 27 gunpowder per). [I've not found (or seen) any major use for large amounts of TNT – beyond greifing and a few autofarms that strike me as impractically overproductive. Because of this, I'm not sure how important making TNT difficult to obtain in quantity should be.]

The problem is that there are different fireworks, colorful with creeper heads, etc. I think that for this to be implemented, there needs to be a new item: Colorful Firework, basically just a firework with a colorful firework star.

TNT is not that powerful at removing blocks, especially hard ones (stone, ender stone, etc. -- only removes about 8 blocks of those per 1 TNT). Having to dig 4 sand blocks for 1 TNT kinda defeats its purpose.

Being able to make it automatable to manufacture would make TNT actually useful.

If there was some kind of fuel powered grinder block that allowed you to grind Stone and Cobblestone into Gravel, then Gravel into Sand, I think that would fix the problem. It also would make Gravel and Sand renewable, and give further use to the inevitable large amount Stone you get while mining, if you choose not to use a Cobblestone generator.
That increases the cost of a single TNT by 1 Coal (4 "smelts" to make 4 Gravel, then another 4 to turn it to Sand), plus it slows down your ability to make it until you have the means to mass produce the Sand. That's more difficult than getting the Paper and String imo.

Yeah, but sand is not renewable or auto-farmable. The point is to be able to make a fully-automated TNT factory so that massive amounts of TNT for construction projects could be obtained without having to swing a shovel. Gunpowder can be auto-farmed/ So can be sugarcane and string. But not sand.
I disagree. With this new recipe you could mass produce game braking amounts of TNT. You can easily farm gun power with mob farms mixed with item sorters... paper is SUPER easy to farm... Again sting is the same... mob farms and item sorters... PLUS spider spawners...

Nobody uses TNT in survival PvP anyway. Perhaps, you're thinking about minigames like Hunger Games and Skywars. You can throw a pre-ignited TNT at enemies there, but not in Vanilla Survival.
Putting a TNT block down, lighting it up -- all while hoping the opponent is nice enough not to turn you into minced meat while you're engaging in this nonsense -- and then politely asking your opponent to walk into said ignited TNT -- have you ever even PvP'd in Minecraft?
You clearly have never played on a good old factions server... this will brake MP Minecraft in 2 seconds FLAT!

You clearly don't understand that we are discussing Vanilla Minecraft here.
Factions gameplay is based on plugins and as such the plugin makers can adjust any Vanilla mechanics they don't like for when they design an update in the future (if this suggestion ever gets implemented). Just like PvP servers adjust for 1.9+ PvP mechanics to make new versions on MC feel like a 1.8 version in terms of PvP.

You do know that sand can be found in beaches and rivers, not just deserts.

String needs more uses and I agree this makes more sense instead of.. too much sand. More gunpowder maybe?
