BUT it shouldn't be torches. It should be those lanterns Notch was talking about, why?:
So that even if the torch won't have it's infinite light taken out once the lantern exist, the lantern would still have a use that the torches don't
Extra features should use extra materials

Apparently Notch has tested portable light sources, and they are possible, however he claimed it gave him a headache/queezy feeling.
I believe there are mods for this sort of thing.
No worries my good man, that WAS IN the past!
Now that we have upgraded into a new lighting engine, it IS NOW POSSIBLE!
you can only hold one thing in your 'hands' at any one time, so as soon as you go to dig/mine etc the area you had illuminated would return to darkness ?
That's why you can place these lanterns!I was merely suggesting an extra feature to the lantern to make more useful, but without it being a handheld lightsource, it would be as useful as a normal torch, which would make it worthless with its increase of material usage.

This is a good point.

btw adding this to op
Phearo, I believe the exact word Notch's twitter used was that handheld light was too "jumpy," i.e, the way the lighting engine works, a light source is tied to the particular block it's in. In the case of a handheld light source, that is the block location the player is currently standing inside. Each time you step to a different block, the handheld light source "jumps" to that location and the lighting updates accordingly.
The smooth lighting mode we have now simply smooths the "edges" of light when one block has a different light level than another adjacent to it. A handheld light source would still "jump" whenever the player moves, which is what Notch disliked about his tests.
If I recall, Notch also said that Mojang had a long discussion in which it was decided that portable light sources would never be added, as Mojang considered them too OP. I think.
I hope you take in account that glow-stone lights up all the time so it should in your hands.
