This would be a material you could craft and then paint onto blocks. 1 Application makes the blocks (something like) 4x harder to break, perhaps another application makes them 8x harder to break. The design of this (invisible) paint is to hinder impatient griefers. As to the crafting recipe, perhaps it could involve gold? Finally giving it a purpose.
Why don't you use obsidian? It takes 15 secs. to mine. Or you could play somewhere were they have no griefing policies. And if you are on a PvP server, then it isn't even griefing.
Reason to use gold: Because it currently has no purpose.
Reason not to "just use obsidian": Because then everything would have to be made out of obsidian.
With a hardening-agent, you could make your structures out of any material, and still reinforce it against griefers and creepers.
I'm not completely against griefing. I think, though it is annoying as heck sometimes, it still adds an interesting element to the game. However, I think builders should have at their disposal, some stronger way of resisting griefers.
With invisible paint, you are not going to know where you painted and where you haven't. This could cause a lot of potential problems. Also, I see this working to make creepers less creepish. I am meh and frown on that.

You're right, I didn't think about the problem with applying it when it's invisible. There has got to be a solution to that problem. Maybe it becomes visible when within arm-reach? I don't think it is a game-breaking feature, because you'd have to make it out of something particularly rare, which is why I suggested it be made using gold. I don't think it would massively impact the creepish nature of creepers, because only protected blocks would be strengthened. Unless you have massive amounts of gold, you're going to have assets vulnerable to creeper explosions. And as long as you cant apply the paint to yourself, you'll still be personally vulnerable as well.

All right everyone, if we don't buy Lamborghinis for one day, the price will go way down and then we can all afford one. It's Economics!
Maybe something like 8 blocks per bucket? Also how would the blocks be counted as being resistant, does it work against tnt and creepers?
If it did that would be pretty cool and I'd like to see it.
