This is an Idea I had when I was thinking about moving to a new area on me and my friends server to an area where I could find lapis lazuli and sandstone since the server we have was made and explored quite a bit prior to those updates. I was thinking about what would happen to the castle I had built if I were to abandon it to move elsewhere, and realized that nothing would happen. so I thought, what if the materials used in the construction of the castle were to decay and age.
The idea would be if no player was within a certain range of certain blocks (cobblestone, wood, glass, chests, iron and anything manufactured) for a certain amount of time that block would change into a decayed version of that block and may even gain special properties like...
Cobblestone (stairs and slabs too) --> mossy cobblestone (I'm aware this change is already intended at some point)
Wood planks (stairs and slabs too) --> rotted wood, takes longer to burn and has a chance to spawn mushrooms on top if in a dark place.
Glass --> broken glass, can't be gathered acts the same as cactus if stepped on but safe to touch from sides or bottom.
Bricks --> brittle bricks can be crafted down into two bricks.
Iron --> rusted iron, nothing special can't be broken back into iron ingots.
Chests --> rusted shut chest, must be broken to obtain any contents it may contain, is destroyed when broken. Any food items within will become moldy or rotten variants of what they were before the decay and hurt you for what they would normally restore if eaten.
Work bench --> worn work bench, will break after a number of uses.
Torches --> burnt out torch, breaks into a stick
bed --> moldy bed, now this is an interesting one if it can be made to work. If one uses it it has the chance to send the user to the nether with no way to return unless a nether gate is nearby.
Wool --> moldy wool, is a dull color variation of whatever color it was before along with holes and mold on it. May have mushrooms growing on it but can not be gathered.
and finally Cake (when placed down) --> Creeper birthday cake, hurts players eating it and has an increased chance to spawn creepers around it. it DOES NOT spawn creepers just increases their spawn rate, and monsters can attack the cake for health.
the time it would take to take to decay would have be vary between single player and multiplayer. Ideally it would be a number of days in real time of active server playing for decay to take place in multiplayer . The distance would have to be considerable as well, probably at least three times the distance one can see while viewing distance is on far. There are some obvious and major flaws with this idea, especially for multiplayer but just thought I'd throw it out there. Also not sure if this idea has been suggested before since search is broken.
two to three in game months would probably suffice for something to be officially abandoned. To be honest I'm not sure if a server could handle the decay. Decay would probably have have to work like grass growth and grow out from a few blocks that would become afflicted with decay.

Incompetence is a plague. I am the cure.
For all your wolf suggestion needs, I present the WOLF MEGATHREAD!
Stories: A Miner's Chronicle, The Lost Chronicle [Entries 32-2, 33-1, and 33-2 out!]
Plus, that's a lot of independant local variables to watch out for; would a server be able to track and update all that?
