Gunpowder is rare, due to only enemies possessing it, but has only one use - TNT. However, all the items needed to make gunpowder is there in Minecraft. However, to prevent mass gunpowder making, it either needs to be very time-consuming to create, or be composed of one or more rare elements. Currently there are two sources of sulfur-containing items in the world - Coal and lapis lazuli. One is very common, but the other requires you to travel deep into the ground to obtain in small amounts - Which one should be used? Another ingredient, charcoal, is part of the process so it should be included regardless of recipe. Another possible object to use in the recipe is wheat for the processing of saltpeter, a major component of gunpowder, but added into the gunpowder recipe to omit the need to create saltpeter before gunpowder. (While animal droppings would be better than wheat, I doubt Notch would add that.)
Or, all four can be added into the recipe, making the production both rare and time-comsuming to create the necessary items. Something like...
He means crafting gunpowder out of existing ingame resources. You sir, have done your homework and are clearly A smart individual. If anyone tries to say no to this then they are being stupid. I can never get enough gunpowder to produce my kind of payload and I always surplus in coal and lapis anyway.

No, not neccesarily. We who do not support this have reasons for not supporting it. Like:
1) Creepers, while a decent challenge, do become easy to fight once you learn how to.
2) If you want unlimited gunpowder, you can make one of those mob spawning/killing/looting traps.
3) It would make getting gunpowder too easy, even though you require four materials, they are each pretty easy to aquire. (With the occasional exception for lapis lazuli, but that drops lots of lapis lazuli dye when the ore block is broken.)
Each of these are valid points, and I do not support the ability to harvest gunpowder by mixing materials/mining it.

If your looking for a challenge then you need to stop playing minecraft lol.

I'm not looking for a challenge as much as I am looking for a building game that has things that want to kill you. Minecraft fits that perfectly. Also, I dont ever remember saying that I was looking for a challenge, I just said creepers can be a challenge untill you know how to fight them. (At least, I meant to say that. :tongue.gif:)

What a dumb thing to say..
He just said fighting creepers is a decent challenge and he doesn't want that to change. Way to completely ignore what he said.
As for the thought behind the OP I like that it made sense, but fighting creepers is an extremely fun task for me to go through. Why would you need so much more TNT anyways? Creepers are found just about everywhere and with a diamond sword they could be killed/farmed very easily.
Oh yea also

Also a very dumb thing to say, so if people don't agree with you their stupid? Seriously get over yourself.
I personally do think that tnt should be rare, and making one of those giant mob towers takes forever (I made one with some help and it took me around three days). I'm not sure how common tnt will become if this was added, but it seems that it would be good for people who only play on peaceful.
If you build one of those mob towers, you deserve the unlimited stream of items that are coming your way. Otherwise you should have to fight for the item dropped by creepers. This is nothing more then a creeper nerf.
I am fine with getting gunpowder from creepers. If there was an alternative method to get gunpowder, killing creepers would be pointless.
It would just be a more satisfying way of obtaining gunpowder. Tonk tonk tonking a creeper is more interesting than tonk tonk tonking stone to get the materials.

...Or would that be too much?
EDIT: clarification...
I support this

A little tweaking could make it so that gunpowder could be manufactured, but not so easily.
