A land-based equivalent of the sea pickles would be fantastic as a light source. A glowing plant block would allow players to light up large areas of land to prevent mob spawns, without ruining the natural landscape with torches - instead the luminous plant would fit into the grass in a much more subtle, natural way. It could also change in ‘greeness’ depending on the biome it’s placed in (like tall grass, ferns, etc), making it blend into the natural landscape even more effectively. The addition of a glowing plant could replace the ugly torch spamming that we see today, and it makes sense to be added to the game since we already have a water-based light source that looks natural - sea pickles. We need land pickles too!

Actually I'd rather it be something totally intangible rather than a plant. Plants are limited in needing to be on grass or parented to a flower pot or the like and while having something like this would be handy for illuminating outside it would be mostly useless in a base.
I'd like to see a block similar to the minecraft:barrier which is totally invisible (only able to be seen with the item in hand) but with lighting physics and no collision box. That way it can be placed anywhere, including in the air, without interfering with the overall look of the build.
Yeah, that'd be ideal but I don't think that would be a survival-type feature. Though it'd be great for mapmakers!
Agreed, when I think about builds like this I always think of them from an operator's standpoint. Probably because I play pvp/raid/grief which means doing something like illuminating a large area is a death sentence unless you're building as an op in a protected area.
I kind of like the idea but while it would add a weapon to our lighting arsenal it wouldn't be the all-in-one lighting solution I've always wanted. Maybe if there was a feature similar to water-logging, only with light, we could illuminate our builds without needing to spam/hide light sources that may not fit the creation. Maybe something like slime ball + glowstone dust = luminary which could be added to a block in the crafting inventory? I don't know, I'm just sick of hiding torches under leaves and having dark, empty ceilings.
Other than the color of the block (and varying this with biome), how do you intend this to differ from Jack-o-Lanterns?
How/where is it intended that this block/plant be obtained/farmed?
It’d look much more like sea pickles than jack-o-lanterns in that the plant would be small and cluster-shaped, looking more like a part of the grass than a full solid block. Jack-o-lanterns are big, bulky and even more obvious than torches if you plant them everywhere!
The luminous plants could generate naturally in patches in flower forests or jungles, or some other biome where there’s an abundance of plant life.
