I've seen a lot of chair suggestions with the same flaw– the chair serves no purpose. We have beds, but they allow you to skip the night and set your spawn. Some have suggested that chairs be used to skip the day, but others argue that removing the ability to simply sit down from the chair also takes away from its aesthetic use. So, I propose a mixed approach to solve those issues.
As you can see above, chairs would be able to be made out of wood, cobblestone, and wool. They link together when placed together (allowing you to make a couch), but this can be avoided by holding shift while placing them.
When you right-click on a chair, you sit in it. Just like there is a "leave bed" button that appears when you enter a bed, there is a button that says "skip to night." This button fades away after sitting in the chair for 5 seconds. Pressing the button will make the screen fade to dark, and then the game will skip to nighttime. Like with beds, every player on the server must be doing this to skip to night.
The chair does not contribute to the nights slept statistic like the bed since you are choosing to experience the dangers of the night. Also note that the chairs do not set or remove players' spawnpoints.
If you right-click a chair with a wool block, it will add cushioning. On the wooden and cobblestone chair, it looks like this:
But on the wool chair, it looks like this:
(If the chair had another chair adjacent to it only on one side, it would have the second model; otherwise, it'd have the first model.)
With this system, chairs would be customize-able, aesthetically pleasing, and useful for if you need to skip to night.
As always, full marks on the presentation... well done.
I'll append some commentary on the specifics of the suggestion, but the base reason for
NO SUPPORT
is that this (and many similar proposals) moves MC away from
"Here Be Blocks, Place Them to Make Cool Stuff"
towards
"here are our conceptions of 'things', professionally designed and nicely rendered;
memorize the recipes [or JFGI] and you can arrange the the things we've created "
[…and remember to buy this year's splatbook to have all the new 'things' we've made for you].
Blocks (including the iconic early Lego® sets) have always been about what one could imagine and build; this is in contrast to dollhouses which focus on arranging acquired bits and using the result as props for a make-believe game.
IMO, MC should concentrate on being the former (for which it is extremely well suited) rather than the latter, which field is already well saturated.
[Although my interest in dollhouses has ever been limited to designing and building them and the furnishings thereof, I am not disparaging these as toys, they are merely very different tools that support/encourage different kinds of play. (There is also clearly some crossover.) ]
Tangentially related is the objection that (while I find the chairs you've designed attractive), they represent only the most limited selection of 'chairness'.
Putting one version in the game seems like opening a door to all the other types of furnature various people will then want.
[Tying the chair to an ingame use (an anti-bed that skips days), offers some grounds to resist further movement down this track, but adding an alarm clock function to the existing beds and thus expanding the use of that item seems a better bulwark.]
This effect would only increase if one also consideres all the other 'things' players are now forced to . . . . . empowered to creatively improvise from the comparitively limited selection of basic shapes.
— — — — —
The above notwithstanding, I have sone minor quibbles/questions about the mechanics of the suggestion.
Given that six blocks produce four stairs, three blocks producing a chair implies that a chair takes two blocks worth of material.
Since the chairs proposed have an anti-bedlike function, adding a requirement for some wood would bring them more into line with the bed recipe. [Suggest three slabs (all of the same type) positioned 'under' a digonal of planks/cobble/wool. Whether the planks would result in decorative bits in the appropriate wood type is something that might be thought about; this would greatly expand the decorating options to 36 varieties of wood/wood chairs alone…]
Since there is no longer a restriction on the number of blocks, I see no reason to limit this recipe to cobble; the rest of the stone (and possibly mineral/ore) blocks would further expand options [Dark oak trimmed emerald chairs... :yippe!:]
What effect does 'skip to night' have on the time since slept statistic?
On one's spawn point?
[I can see uses for either of the basic options on both these questions:
'day-skipping' could be useful for hunting MobB if it did not reset or hatching turtle eggs if it did
spawn reset without sleeping could be useful for hunting, but NOT resetting spawn leaves the bed niche intact ]

WARNING: I have an extemely "grindy" playstyle; YMMV — if this doesn't seem fun to you, mine what you can from it & bin the rest.
This is going to have to be a no support from me. You can already make chairs pretty simply, with stairs and item frames/slabs, using creative methods to get different shapes of chairs like having the floor be slabs so you can make it look like there's wool half-slabs as the base. None of these interesting methods would have come about if these were aded to the game, and like the developers say, I think this would take away some of the creativity of the game.
Contriving a use for an item doesn't immediately make the item have a use. Whilst there may be times where one wishes to skip to the night, simply waiting is generally good enough, given day-time is productive, unlike the night. Furthermore, as mentioned above, seats draw back from the 'DIY' aspect of the game, instead providing set pieces. Chair-seats are perfectly capable as being chairs or seats so I don't see a use for this. To be honest, I feel Mojang will add seats in the future, if only in an attempt to say 'we added chairs like you asked us to', but I digress.
I don't really see your first argument. It makes sense on the surface, but if you look at what Minecraft already has (beds, ladders, doors, paintings, etc.) you'll see that chairs aren't that out there and that adding basic furniture does not necessarily lead to so much more furniture being added that an aspect of the game is taken away.
Adding extremely complex chairs would over complicate things in my opinion, and I'm surprised that you're bringing it up since it seems to go in the opposite direction as your first argument.
I hadn't thought of the "nights slept" statistic, or the spawnpoint. I'll add it to the post. The chair does not contribute to the nights slept statistic like the bed and does not set or remove the player's spawnpoint.

By this logic, why have beds? You can already make them with wool blocks. The "chairs" currently in the game don't look as good as the chairs proposed for this suggestion, as with beds made out of wool blocks and carpets vs. the actual beds.
This would not take away creativity from the game since players could still make their own custom chairs if they wanted to. Plus, you could expand upon these chairs by, for example, placing trapdoors on the back to make it look taller.

I wouldn't say "just waiting" is generally good enough for all players. If I want to hunt creepers for gunpowder or slimes for slime balls, I don't want to have to wait through the entire day just to do so.
I think a far simpler solution would just make it so you can sit on chairs. I like the idea of skipping to day, but chairs don't really fit here. What if you can use the bed to skip to night, while the sun is still out?
Probably a better and more elegant solution would be to allow sitting anywhere, like some form of shift. I still don't know when you'd need to really turn to night quickly but if that is desired then yes, probably repurposing the bed would be most effective.
I quite like the idea of sitting in a chair to skip to night.
Also, I don't like the idea of a cobblestone chair. It sounds both extremely uncomfortable and looks extremely fragile.

Chairs fitting or not fitting is subjective, so I can't really argue with you on that.
However, there are two reasons why I didn't just suggest what you suggested right there:
1. It's honestly quite difficult to make convincing chairs (especially couches) and it looks odd when you use a sign as the edge of a chair and then have other signs nearby. With these chairs, it's clear that they are chairs, and in my opinion, they look much better.
2. Having a separate place to skip to night encourages you to have more things in your house, and thus more rooms in your house, similar to how having the brewing stand separate from the crafting table encourages you to make a larger house or build more rooms. Before this, a living room or dining room wouldn't have any practical function at all (unless, of course, you had a chest or dispenser with food). Also, you're not supposed to be sleeping in the chair, but instead "resting."

As I said above, there are benefits from having chairs as a separate block.
