I thought about it awhile, and came up with this idea.
Some people are in a rush sometimes to get to the ground, and sometimes just mess up and fall and die in a pit and lose everything. It gets rather annoying, but its to be expected when you fall far enough, of course.
I propose the idea of a "parachute" item as a chance fix for it. And not just some all-your-problems-are-solved parachute, one that still retains a challenge. It could be made with a string in each corner and wool/leather in the center, a simple design, or a top row of wool/leather and string down the left and right column's blanks. It automatically deploys and removes one from your inventory (or a new "Accessory" slot with the armor slots) whenever you have fallen enough of a height that would severely damage or kill you. To make it a temporary thing, have it a limited number of uses so it wouldn't seem like a permanant "Don't die for slipping up" solution, would need to eventually make a new one, like armor isn't a permanant damage-reduction solution, and tools aren't a permanant mining aid. Even occasionally have a "mis-packed chute" so people don't think it's a guaranteed thing and jump off of everything or ignore important design details like a staircase or ladder. The more you use it, the closer you get to losing it as the durability drops (of course), and the more likely a chance of a mis-packed chute you have because of wear on the string and wool.
It would both be an aid to help with the occasional slip up (like backing off of a high building you made when running from a monster or digging into a natural deep cave), and still be a risky thing to maintain the need for caution and a well built structure. Plus anyone who is carrying a lot of valuables and winds up falling and being saved by the parachute because of luck would learn a little something about being careful and storing their stuff often. The whole "survival" scenario is left intact, and it would be a good aid.
Here's a direct link to my take on Parachutes
I'm still in the middle of revamping how the packs will work, which will also introduce a slightly different method of using the parachute, but the major premise that will be staying the same; Parachutes don't have durability, but have a 25%-35% chance of failing to deploy properly, but players can store multiple parachutes to use as backups. This means that rather than parachutes being a quick and dirty method of getting down from a height, it's something that is kept for emergency use to give you at least SOME chance of surviving a really bad fall.
