It seems this thread isn't really dead anymore... Support! One possible consideration- it might be a good idea to avoid the sounds of animals as ambiance, as it might be difficult to distinguish between, say, ambient bird chirps and the sounds made by an actual bird mob. I'd slightly prefer to have ambient sounds consist entirely of things like wind, the rustling of leaves, and the sound of ocean waves.
i know there are a million threads like this, and that this thread has been necromanced from the bottomless pits of hell. but i'll try to contribute anyway.
this should be the sound of the desert
when there is a forest fire ( determined when more than ≥ 10 trees are on fire in a certain radius simultaneously)
river biomes
where the beach biome meets the ocean biome (at 30 mins)
flowing water placed next to each other that is between 1-7 block across but has than a 10 block change
flowing water with ≥ 7 blocks wide with ≥ 10 block change
(its important to identify the different types of water because water sounds different in different settings. )
Seems like a very minor programming effort with some possible but not likely performance issues.
The tricky bit would be the feathering off/on of sound as you moved between biomes and determining when you were in a cave vs on the surface of a biome.
Dude. Necro posting much.
i like the idea anyway and have made a new version for 2014
Yes. cause I totally spread gold bars on my toast...
Anyway, great idea, want. Nao.

Somehow, I ended up GM-ing this thing over at Bay12;

This mod does a pretty good job of it, but it hasn't been updated in a little while.
I know what you mean though, Minecraft is too quiet.
How about nature ambiances that fade out when the music starts?
its a good suggestion (something rare!!!)
Full support for me
1- Finish the mod API
2- Give brains to villagers (make em more usefull)
3- Add ambiance: birds, fishes, bugs, crabs on beaches, monkeys in jungles...
4- More plants! Aquatic, any fruit tree, bushes....
5- Ambiant sounds!

Just like that, except a little more in the background.
