Title says it all. Color themed lamps for houses, or even underwater building, perhaps. I had the idea since my preferred form of lighting is glowstone behind behind , embedded inside walls, but glowstone does not look too appealing, so I thought this would be nice. It would be crafted as thus(same as Jack-O-Lantern, I know);
[] [] []
[] []
[] []
It would have the same lighting radius as glowstone/jack-o-lantern, and would create heat, same as torches, therefor melting ice and snow around it, and as said earlier, it would be waterproof, thus functional underwater. You could use any kind of color, of course. It would provide lighting a little bit nicer and more obtainable than glowstone, yet still not "too" easily obtainable(considering you'd have to obtain a { + } and the preferred color{white wool + dye}to begin with) and not a complete alternative to torches, thus not making them overused.
On the other hand, I know a lot of people would suggest a problem being that due to common sense, an open flame inside a cloth cube would light it on fire, but I mean, this is Minecraft, not real life(come on, a torch waterproofed by being inside a pumpkin{with holes in it for mouth and eyes} isn't that realistic either, but you know, whatever).
I'm new here, so any suggestions are appreciated. Any criticism is also accepted, as long as its not in the form of "flaming" haha. I really don't see how this could be a bad idea, really, so if anyone does, let me hear it.

Cloth is a flammable material.
Make it out of glowstone dust.
Maybe it could be something like that instead, justifying certain said problems(glass representing glowstone or glowstone dust);

I suppose making it from glowstone instead of glowstone dust would make is less readily available, thus harder to obtain.
Just a suggestion.

Can I just say that I think that this a dumb idea and makes no logical sense whatsoever and it would kill me if I past twenty words on this subject?

I am just a guy looking for good suggestions that are original, creative, and match the theme of Mine-craft. I have some mob ideas that I need help forming which is a community project.
First of all, I never mentioned colored lighting myself. I said colored cubes which would make colorless lighting, just for a nice alternative to glowstone, jack-o-lanterns or torches. Although I do kind of like the idea of colored lighting, that is not what I meant.

i dont know, i kindda like colored lighting...ergo, does putting glowstone behind water really make the light blue? meh...
It doesn't, but I like having water in my walls, and it provides a nice hiding spot for lighting, but you can still see it through the water.

1: due to them being obstructed by wool, theire lighting should be one less then a
2: they should NOT work underwater
I guess this would make sense. Maybe something a little bit different(sorry if this blows out into a completely different idea):
First, Glass Light, which would be on its own a form of lighting, a torch inside a glass cube, thus waterproof(or something like that)
or maybe this would make more sense;

and then (diamond in the role of glass light);

This would justify the waterproofing, and possibly make it a little more sensed to have lighting a little bit brighter than torches. Maybe just the same lighting as torches, actually.

EDIT:
actually, i think you should keep white, light gray, grey, dark grey, black, and eventually brown out of this...that would just look awkard
Haha, for brown(LOL), grey, dark grey and black, I definately agree, but I still think white would be okay.
PS: I appreciate the and give you back a !

I suppose you could say that, but if you think the idea is so dumb, to the point of feeling the need to comment, and although I understand you are venting your opinion which is completely in context, couldn't you at least give constructive criticism?
I think its not at all THAT dumb, and although I understand you might have a negative opinion on it, I don't think its beyond some of the other ideas posted, such as cars, amongst other unrealistic ideas.
Maybe I didn't completely think it through, but look at the other part I posted in this post, maybe that would make more sense. Sorry if I offended your freedom of speech in any way but I feel like your post was a bit too harsh; Its not like I asked for uranium powered space rockets...

1. I know you said the obvious already in your original post, wool is flammable so use glowstone if this was done.
2. Wool should not have any underwater abilities since that does not make any sense at all. Pumpkins doing so is kind of a treat and are more rare than wool. Having this ability makes underwater lighting much to easy to obtain, since wool is found just about everywhere.
3. You commented on colored lighting and I understand that isn't what you meant, but then whats the point? Your saying just a colored block that emits light? Sounds kind of lame to be honest.
If the block is destroyed do you get the torch and the wool back?

anyway, i support this as long as you fix the following items....
1: due to them being obstructed by wool, theire lighting should be one less then a
2: they should NOT work underwater
keep it decorative >_>....anyways....i give you a piece of ham ^-^

you can get them with worldedit though....
at any rate, you COULD make glass torches a little better...but...notch already has plans for that ^-^
i think hes going to make the LANTERNS as he call it, with 8 glass blocks, and a lightstone dust...probably
also, all torches will change into lanterns, so stock up now! torches made after that will expire in time...
maybe the glass one could just be a waterproof torch?
also thanks for the meat -nomnomnom-
i now craft you this toghether...guess what it is...
hint: it wants hugs
I am so making that my sig!
