Well I got this decent suggestion of defences for your house like auto turrets (starcraft preference), tower (works just like a flamethrower but AI controlled), mortar towers (dangerous), and long-ranged sniper turrets (also ai controlled)
Auto Turrets:
Range: 5 blocks with the exeption of darkness levels
DMG:2 per shot
Ammo: arrows, iron(for bullets), and eggs (for fun)
Reload is 2 seconds
Tower:
Range 2-3 blocks (can light up darkness with its min talents)
DMG:1 (with 100% that the enemy turns aflame)
Ammo: coal, charcoal, and must implement flint and tinder
Reload is .5 seconds
Mortar Towers:
*Caution EXTREMLY DANGEROUS IF YOU SUGGEST YOURSELF TO LIVE IN A WOOD HOUSE ON THE OUTSIDE WORLD
Range: 5-7 blocks enemies near 2 blocks of it cannot be hit (starcraft siege tank preference)
DMG: 5-15 hearts. It Varies were the shell hits if the enemy is hit on head it is killed instantly if the enemy is hit and the shell is far the enemy only gets 2-3 dmg.
Ammo: TNT TNT TNT and the exeption of trapping creepers and shooting them outwards.
Reload is 10 seconds
Long Ranged Tower:
*Caution Friendly Fire
Range 5-9.5 blocks enemies atleast on top the tower cant be killed
DMG: Insta-Kill (with a 75% that the ammunition will pierce the enemy)
Reload: Slug Like 25 seconds
Auto Turret Build: Furnace=Dispenser

Theres a probability that you can input a menu to the turrets to assign which things to kill and which things not to kill.
Though the crafting might look wrong I might be able to find additional blocks to replace things.
Any devices in this game should be either clockwork, some sort of steam/water wheel/wind power, or redstone magical nonsense.
I see the notion of having automatic defenses as having some merit, but it would need to be executed quite well to fit in the game. Your present suggestion, as I see it, does not.

Plus you could probably build defences for your house in much more interesting ways then simply plopping a turret down right outside your front door.
