We all know the conventional method of making NetherGates but I think people would enjoy some freedom in it's construction. At least making the enclosed area within Obsidian Blocks portal Blocks.
The reason I bring this up is because I wanted to construct this model for the Mage Tower portal in my SW replica

I just think it would be a good idea all around, thoughts?
I'm of the opinion that portals should need the proper dimensions, but that you should be able to make different sizes, with different abilities. Small 1x2 portals with 3x4 border would only stay lit for a short period of time and then go out on its own. larger 3x4 portals with 5x7 border would be immune to the effect of ghast bombs deactivating the portal, but it would also be more likely to let nether mobs spawn in the overworld and overworld mobs to spawn in the nether around that larger portal.
Also, obsidian should be craftable into slabs and stairs, which can then also be used as parts of the portal so that you can create variety in how the portal looks (flat side of stairs must always be facing inside of the border towards where portal blocks would be)
