I remember in the good old days of Minecraft PE when you only had iron armour in the creative inventory and you couldn't craft stone bricks and had to use a stone cutter. Another feature back then was that you could use string to make wool. This would add another use to string, only being able to craft bows and fishing rods at the moment. I don't just mean PE, but Java too. Some mods add it, but that's a lot of hassle to install forge, make a mod folder and find a safe mod file that you can download. ALL FOR A CRAFTING RECIPE.
here's how you do it - obtain 4 string, dip your character's feet in water (mandatory) and eat a golden carrot (that unlocks secret crafting recipes). then you have 1 minute during which you are able to use secret recipes. wool can be crafted by 2x2 string.
enjoy!
(regarding mods, only use curseforge or pmc. most other sites are a scam.)
Many arcane recipes (of varying power) may be found by perusal of the mystic font of (mostly correct) knowledge, to wit : https://minecraft.gamepedia.com
