My playstyle has shifted between Difficult and Peaceful a lot, and I've been doing some meta-gaming about some of this stuff, so I thought it might be interesting to have these as official in-game items somehow.
Consider an item that would degrade after X days (perhaps 3), but during that time would completely prevent enemies from spawning at surface level or entering the surface area (the spot capable of having sunlight) at all. Thus, if you have one, you get three days of no worries about enemies unless you're in caves. Almost like having Peaceful activated, but not quite.
The recipe should be of medium difficulty (not e.g. requiring you to find Obsidian), and it becomes a placeable block. Also, there should be some sound or signal that it makes when it's about to lose its effectiveness.
Suppose that in Difficult it's not possible to craft this; on Normal you can; and on Easy you start with one at your spawn location, so you have three days instead of just one in which to figure out about the world and make your shelter. (Bonus: It would mark your spawn location so you could find it again easily.)
Perhaps there could be a way to craft one for a specific cave system as well (prevents enemies from spawning in or entering the connected cave area it protects, but you gotta be careful when digging out to new areas). That might be more difficult to code for, though.
Thoughts?

My nephews and I have started posting Minecraft videos on my YouTube channel! Fairly random, but enjoyable.
General schedule is 4 PM Mon-Fri and 10 AM Saturdays. Most popular MC vid so far is the one Vechs laughed at on Twitter!
I think it'd be cool.... I feel immoral pressing the peaceful button when I want to do things, maybe this will be an excuse for me to do stuff not on peaceful :tongue.gif:

Please do notice that the block wouldn't stop enemy spawning entirely (as in Peaceful), but it would stop them from being on the surface. Caves would still have monsters. And skellies wouldn't come out of shadowy places (even at night), but could still shoot you if you got too close.
It'd be possible to have this as a limited-range thing, keeping monsters away for X squares. That's something even lights don't do, only walls (at present).

Why do I say this?
If you give people the option to stop enemies from spawning for X days, they will farm the materials and remain absolutely immune. This seems like a lot of wasted energy when "escape->options->peaceful" is so much easier.
Metagaming, in minecraft? About the only way you can do that is using the Minecraft Wiki to learn how to do things.
And on the unnecessary item, I don't think it would be a good idea. As Peaceful, stated already, exists, and there is no point in restricting mobs to only spawn in caves that you won't be going into while you are on the surface.

Retired StaffIt's just kind of unnecessary.
