They would be used as a get-away device. Once dropped, it would explode. Forcing any other players/mobs out of the explosion range, once the explosion is done it would form a cube around a 10x10 area which nothing else can enter for 2 minutes or until it is broken.
How they would work?
Holding the ward's you would right click and the wards would explode, forming the square and sending enemies out of the way. It would be crafted like so.

What inspired me?
The Painted Man: The novel follows three POV characters in their passage from childhood to maturity. They are inhabitants of a world plagued by the attacks of demons known as "corelings", which rise from the planet's core each night to feast upon humans. The ongoing attrition of these attacks have reduced humanity from an advanced state of technology, to a 'dark age'. The only defense against the corelings are magical runes or "wards" that can be drawn, painted, or inscribed to form protective barriers around human settlements. These are, however, fragile and prone to failure unless properly maintained.
Other Stuff
Please add onto the suggestion, I would also recommend reading The Painted Man. It is a great book. I may add onto this in the future, possibly adding more recipes and uses for Wards.
What is the cost? Duration? Will it ward against fire/water? Can you tie it in a knot? Can you tie it in a bow? Can you throw it on your shoulder like a continental soldier? Can your post RANK LOW!♫♫♫
I think the idea might be better as a temporary item. You use it when you are getting attacked and it would form a shield for maybe... 30 seconds? However, personally, i don't like magic things in Minecraft. It's a good idea though
Maybe if monsters could attack the wards, eventually breaking them, it would be a good idea (After all, what self-respecting undead, supernaturally fast spider or animate shrub just allows itself to be trapped?)
I'd say if a ward block had 50HP or so, and once that was killed it destroyed the ward and reduced the HP of all nearby wards by 50% (to represent the weakening of the ward as a whole). The ward block/whatever it is would change color to represent it's integrity failing, before emitting some loud noise when it fails.
Do not post a suggestion unless it is well-thought out. It doesn't have to be complete, but there has to be enough there for people to not ask the 4 or 5 questions I threw at you. People want suggestions not.
Oh, I had a great idea!!! You should be able to make diamond... brb...

diamond block staircases. Wow, why did everyone turn down the suggestion.

It's your suggestion, give it a fair fighting chance to live before you just throw it to the dogs.

Just my additions.
