What if you could create a boat that was basically a floating 10x5 block floating island you could drive. Here is an example of it's shape (Bird's eye view):
Side View:
* The bottom two rows would be under water meaning it is only usable in bodies of water that are at least 2 blocks deep.
This would allow people to basically start with a boat platform and make there own boats! You could place chests, beds, and other useful things to make it a roaming house. Heck once changeable spawns are added you could play the game in a completely nomadic style!
Details:
-Once built, it would take up 6 inventory slots before it is placed.
- The build limit on the boat should be 4 blocks above the base area.
-To craft it, I think you should need this:
However the wood would be x10 in each square.
A mast would be required to move fast at all. Shape of mass:

[] []
Here is the crafting map of the mast:
[] []
*You could use different colored wools to make different patterns for the mast.
*The mast would take up a 4 spaces in your inventory and be place-able anywhere on the boat
*Without a mast the boat would move as fast as someone walking, with 1 mast twice as fast, and with 2 masts triple as fast!
A steering Wheel would be needed to drive the boat and it could be place anywhere on the boat to control it.
Crafting Map:
---
---
*Takes up one inventory spot
An anchor could be crafted to make the boat stop moving on command.
-You would place it on the side of your boat
-Right clicking on a placed anchor would make it drop. Then you right click again to make it come back up.
The crafting map would look like this:
[] []
[] []
*The anchor would take up 4 inventory slots.
That basically sums up the idea, but here is an FAQ section for any other miscellaneous features:
Would the boat have health?
No, as a great amount of work is required to build this thing. However any blocks placed on the boat could be destroyed or ignited as normal; thus allowing SMP warfare to still be possible.
So is there a weight limit?
Yes, sort of. The weight limit would be 100 points, and certain blocks take up more points than others before the weight limit is reached and you can no longer place anything on it:
-Wool, bed, ladders, Steering wheel, other miscellaneous things= 0 points
-Wooden planks, crafting table= 1 point
-Wooden Logs, dirt, glass=2 points
-stone,sand,sandstone=3 points
-Furnace, Iron blocks, gold blocks, lava source, obsidian, any other metal or heavy blocks=4 points
-Mast= 6 points
-Anchor=10 points
-Chest=5 points
*People do not take up weight
*Every extra point of weight reduces boat speed by -0.01. So if your boat has 2 masts, and 80 points of weight:
How would this work in SMP and PvP?
In my opinion, this is where the ship would shine. In SMP you and your friends could easily live on one boat and travel around your world in search of goods while fishing along the way. In PvP piracy could become a possibility and Naval warfare could be fully realized!
Would this cause lag, and are oceans really big enough for this idea?
I am not a programmer so I can't say for sure, but yes I suppose this would put a little strain on the game. However it is by no means not possible to do since there used to not be beds, or the nether and those work well and are getting better and better. However it would be nice if changeable spawn points existed before the introduction of ships.
Oceans really do exist in this game, it is quite possible (Though rare) to find huge bodies of water as far as the eye can see. But this is more of a problem with the world generator. No, I don't want to see huge oceans every 200 blocks, but they really should appear more often. Perhaps there should always be a large ocean within 500 blocks of a spawn.
That's all folks, thanks for reading and please add ideas to make this better. And, show support so Notch notices this!
I did, and there is no fully threshed out idea such as mine. Do you like it or not anyways? If it can be done by Mojang, I see no real downside to this.

Modular ships.
Again i did search that, and this is a new idea that is simpler than many others and has several systems in place that differentiate from other threads. Please read the entire post before you attack me.

Oh and answer if you like it or not!
What in the words "Modular ships" is an attack? Don't say dumb ****.

It's not different. And I agree with Reeves.
I call it an attack because instead of saying "Good Idea" or offering suggestions, you guys immediately tell me to use the search bar 1 min. after I finish the idea. There is no way you read the whole thing in that time and thought it over. Then you call me a dumb ****, so yeah that's and attack. If you think my thread is spam, don't comment and it won't get bumped, otherwise try not to be a total ass about someone's idea.

Itemized criticisms:
A) Your idea has been done before and better. So yeah, use the search bar. That's advice, not an attack.
:cool.gif: "Use the search bar" is a suggestion.
C) I can speed read. Just because YOU can't read and process thoughts quickly, does not mean others cannot.
D) I never called you anything. I told you not to say dumb ****. Taking the words "Modular ships." and calling it an attack is, in fact, you saying dumb ****.
